BLM manages one in every 10 acres of land in U.S. encompassing forests, mountains, rangelands, arctic tundra and deserts

About us

The BLM manages more land – 256 million surface acres – than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM’s multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, and cultural resources on the public lands. In 2021, join us in celebrating our 75th anniversary! Learn more: https://www.blm.gov/about/history/75th-anniversary. #ReImaginePublicLands #PublicLands75

Islands in the sky might sound like a fantasy, but rising more than 6,000 feet above the desert floor, Bureau of Land Management - Arizona's Sky Islands are a reality, supporting biodiversity rarely seen in the West. 🏝️ This pocket of isolated mountains is home to over 30 federally listed species living in both desert and alpine ecosystems. The landscape, also known for its vast heritage and recreational opportunities, is threatened by unprecedented drought and catastrophic wildfire. Sky Islands Mountain range has a uniqueeven sacred—biocultural heritage. It serves as an example of resilience not only of the landscape, but of the people who have settled there. We're proud to invest in the improvement, protection and support of this rare ecosystem. Full video: https://ow.ly/P6n550SL12a. Learn more: https://ow.ly/bJpG50SJGYP.

Any empty nesters out there? What's it like in the sage-grouse world you might ask? As soon as all the eggs in a greater sage-grouse nest have hatched, the hen and chicks leave the spot behind, in search of food and water. As they make their way around, they find new places to nest and bed down each night. The hen shelters her chicks with her body underneath sagebrush. Healthy sagebrush is important to these sage-grouse - the canopy shelters them from predators and the leaves provide food. Learn more ➡️ https://ow.ly/j5gP50SGj7O. #WildlifeWednesday

Happy birthday to us! We don't need fireworks to celebrate when we have night skies that look like this. 🌌🎆 But we are celebrating with a fee-free day! Plan your adventure now: https://ow.ly/7xlV50SCpgZ. On July 16, 1946, the Bureau of Land Management was established by merging the Grazing Service and the General Land Office. Since then, we have evolved and adapted to the nation's changing needs. Today, we manage 245 million acres of public landscapes for all Americans. 📷 Alabama Hills, Bureau of Land Management - California; Marcin Zajac/ Share the Experience.
