#WhyBlackwoodWednesday this week features rising sophomore, Avery Bowen! “I am so thankful to be a student in the Blackwood Department of Real Estate - it has been a game changer for my life! Last semester, I was fortunate to land a shadowing internship at GRAVITY Real Estate Group in Blacksburg. I’m so grateful to have had this hands-on experience and I can’t wait to keep it going in the fall! Every day has been a lesson in practical skills, and I never would have had this opportunity as a first-year student without my Real Estate professors who encouraged me to attend my very first career fair! One of the highlights for me has been learning directly from Cody, my mentor, and his work with The Homeowner Project. This initiative aims to create 100 homeowners over the next five years through a slow flip model. Cody acquires properties and offers owner financing to individuals who might not qualify for traditional loans or mortgages, making homeownership accessible to those who can’t build wealth through conventional ways. Watching how this approach not only generates wealth and facilitates homeownership but also fosters prosperity within our team has been incredible. It’s definitely inspiring some long-term investment goals! Being part of Blackwood and connecting with its people has definitely added to my experience at Virginia Tech, and I couldn’t have imagined a better first year.” How impressive is it that she has an internship after just her first year?! From the incredible professors, alumni, board, and my fellow peers, I have created lifelong connections and relationships that I hope to carry with me through the rest of my time at Virginia Tech and beyond. The wide variety of curriculum along with the incredible and unique opportunities outside of the classroom have provided me with a well rounded and thorough real estate education that I am excited to build on throughout the last 2 years of my college career. This past year, I was very fortunate to become a peer mentor with the department and will be starting my second year in the position this fall. Being a peer mentor has been such an incredible experience as l am able to meet our new students and help guide them through their first semester in Blacksburg.
