Imagine a powerful innovation that can cut infant mortality by a quarter. For premature infants, this life-saving approach is a mother’s touch.🦘 Prolonged skin-to-skin contact between an infant and their mother or caregiver is known as immediate Kangaroo Mother Care (iKMC). New research proves that when small and sick premature babies receive iKMC immediately after birth, it decreases child mortality by a quarter. Throughout much of the world, small and sick premature babies are separated from their mothers until they are medically stabilized. But Dr. Sugandha Arya wanted to know: Is it really better for these babies to be separated? And what would happen if they aren’t? Dr. Arya’s question led her to support a study that revealed immediate Kangaroo Mother Care (iKMC)—immediate skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby—reduces mortality in small and sick preemie babies by 25%. The lesson: keeping babies close to their mothers is not just comforting, it’s life-saving.

The research in question? Dr. Rajiv Bahl and his colleagues' test of immediate Kangaroo Mother Care (iKMC), or skin-to-skin contact after birth, on small and sick preterm babies. The results show that iKMC reduces mortality in small and sick premature babies and can save 150,000 live a year. Sometimes the best solution is a mother’s embrace. How do kangaroos inspire doctors to save newborns in India? Immediate Kangaroo Mother Care, or iKMC, is an immediate skin-to-skin technique between mom and baby, that is shown to dramatically improve the survival rates of unstable, preterm and low birth weight babies. Keeping a newborn on their mother’s chest after birth provides the warmth, comfort, and care they need. iKMC can potentially save an additional 150,000 newborns yearly, allowing more kids to grow up and chase their dreams!
