As AI models continue to advance, there is a critical need for robust testing of these models. Read Piotr Kula’s take on why expert review remains a critical component of AI production workflows.
Like many, I’ve been having some great conversations with clients and industry peers around the GenAI hype, and one topic has stood out: 💡the need for robust testing before GenAI-enabled applications go into production. Why is this such a foundational ingredient for success? Because LLMs aren’t like the tools we’re used to. ❌Unlike SQL or Excel, LLMs can confidently spit out incorrect or incomplete answers. ❌LLMs’ inaccuracies are potentially dangerous because end users are encouraged to treat AI agents as “expert” assistants. We must develop strategies to identify and correct what LLMs get wrong so we can better take advantage of everything they get right. ⌛Right now, we see teams collecting feedback from users who identify incorrect answers—but this isn’t a sustainable approach. Users are typically not domain experts, and they can’t always identify LLMs’ incorrect answers. If they do catch problem answers, they may also rightfully lose trust in the model. Here’s what we need instead: ✅relevant, engaged experts working on each use case ✅a testing strategy that incorporates regular expert reviews ✅high-quality unit tests that use AI judges as complements—not replacements—for SMEs and consultants We’re only at the beginning of the AI wave. Models will evolve. More content will be added into vector stores. And unforeseen obstacles will rear their ugly heads. 🏆To develop truly successful GenAI applications, we must ensure expert reviews are inherently baked into the process as a critical component of all production workflows. AKA, as we ride the AI wave, let’s make sure we don’t leave the human element behind. #AI #GenAI #DataScience #DomainExperts #LLM #LLM #RAG
