On the site of an old strip mall in Union County, NJ, we targeted soil impacted by trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE), two industrial solvents that emanated from a dry cleaning facility on the former property. The contaminated soil was at a depth of 16 feet below the ground surface — under the building structure. As challenging as that already sounds, because there were no as-built plans or drawings to guide us, the structural scope had to be adjusted in the field several times through the direction of our structural engineer. The project entailed several subtasks, including the installation of structural reinforcement, excavation of impacted soils, dewatering, well abandonment & reinstallation, and impacted soil/water transportation & disposal. Though we still have a way to go until completion, AWT project manager Jeff Thorne and site supervisor Dan Gitler, along with crew members Eric Weber and Greg Totten, have done a terrific job maintaining harmony with retailers, the general public, and other affected parties. Battelle 2024 was a homerun. The five-day annual conference, held in Denver this year, was packed with events and informative courses. Baxter Duffy, AWT’s division manager for our drilling and injection services, co-authored and presented three posters at the event. The posters highlighted successful project case studies utilizing innovative approaches to treating chlorinated organic in-situ. Thank you to AWT’s Matthew Dotto for excellent work preparing the posters and getting them approved. Attending the conference for AWT were Peter J. As far as the types of surfaces we remediate, it’s broken into three main categories: Soil remediation: Our main type of remediation, excavation of soil rich in contaminants is common for any major commercial or industrial project, and is vital to address for restoring ecological health. Groundwater remediation: Below the surface, remediation of industrial and potable grade water is also crucial work and requires varying methods and techniques, from pumping systems to in situ treatments. PPE (Personal Protective Equipment): From chemical-resistant gloves to steel-toed boots, our line of work requires extra attention to detail when it comes to proper PPE. Isolate the area: It’s important to create a safe and closed-off work area when remediating an active site, to protect surrounding structures, people, and wildlife. Project Spotlight: AWT Tackles Hudson County Remediation We're thrilled to share the completion of a challenging remediation project at a former petroleum storage facility in Hudson County, NJ.
