World Hepatitis Day, observed on July 28, holds special significance as it coincides with the birthday of Nobel-prize-winning scientist Dr. Blumberg. Dr. Blumberg’s remarkable contributions to public health include the discovery of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) in 1967 and the invention of a blood test to detect the virus. Additionally, he developed the first HBV vaccine in 1969. This annual observance serves as a vital opportunity to raise awareness about viral hepatitis, which is caused by five different agents (hepatitis A-E viruses). Unfortunately, low vaccine coverage for HBV and challenges in detection have led to chronic infections in 350–400 million people worldwide, resulting in liver diseases such as cirrhosis, liver failure, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Notably, approximately 80% of patients undergoing long-term treatment with nucleoside analog inhibitors of HBV DNA polymerase will eventually develop resistance to the treatment. Therefore, ongoing screening for new antiviral drugs remains crucial for effective patient care. ATCC is supporting Hepatitis B virus research in various ways. The HepG2 cell line, made available through ATCC, is widely used for Hepatitis B research. In addition, ATCC has developed quantitative synthetic molecular standards for HBV to use as controls in molecular assays used for the detection and quantification of these viruses from clinical samples. In addition, the Biological and Emerging Infections Resources (BEI Resources), a NIAID-funded program managed by ATCC offers a series of seven stable HepG2 human hepatoma cell lines producing different genotypes of HBV). These cell lines, which represent genotypes of varying prevalence, distribution, disease progression, and treatment outcomes, are a crucial tool for researchers in studying intergenotypic differences in antiviral immunity, pathogenesis, and drug development. Panels of PCR-based tests have become crucial in studying pathogens and detecting infectious diseases, significantly enhancing diagnosis, treatment, and public health monitoring. These panels offer high sensitivity and specificity, allowing clinicians to tailor treatments and respond rapidly to infections. However, it’s not easy to develop. “Building such panels takes time and effort, and the key here is to use authenticated [microbial] strains,” says Leka Papazisi, ATCC Principal Scientist. At ATCC, we provide the essential biomaterials, including “high-quality, quantified microbes, as well as native and synthetic nucleic acids,” that drive the development and validation of these crucial diagnostic tools. “These materials are fundamental to developing PCR panels for the development, validation, and performance monitoring of these systems,” says ATCC Senior Scientist James Budnick, Ph.D. Our commitment to quality and innovation supports researchers worldwide in their fight against infectious diseases.
