About us

General Information Arium AE is a mid-sized design firm serving the Mid-Atlantic Region from our Columbia, Maryland, and Vienna, Virginia offices. We emphasize sustainability, elegant design, and outstanding service. Year after year, we are positioned among the top architectural, engineering, and interior design firms in the region. Company Overview When forming Arium in 1988, Timothy J. Sosinski and Stephen W. McLaughlin wanted a name that would not be tied to them and their tenure at the firm. Arium is derived from the Latin term -ārium, used to denote a place associated with a specific function. While both appreciating and promoting good architectural and engineering design, Arium provides functional designs. Although AEs are often considered the experts in design, the clients truly know their day-to-day operations better than we ever could. At Arium, we pride ourselves on being their partners, providing our expertise in construction, materials, building codes, interior design, and LEED projects.

⭐Today, July 26, marks a significant milestone—the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law in 1990.⭐ This historic legislation, now 34 years old, continues to shape our approach to building design. At Arium AE, we take pride in our expertise in integrating ADA requirements into our services, creating inclusive spaces that cater to the needs of individuals living with disability challenges. When considering accessibility, we believe the best designs are fully integrated into the environment. Our team recently was awarded a retail project by creating a natural, accessible path to the building rather than using a typical ADA ramp. This seamless integration allows the project's accessible portions to blend into the surroundings. We believe in empowering our clients, tenants, and building owners by educating them on ADA laws and requirements, enabling them to make informed decisions, and ensuring their space or building is fully compliant. . . . #Architects #Engineers #InteriorDesigners #AEdesign #ADAdesign Brian Frels, AIA, Scott Walthour, PE, Stephanie Bounds Nunn

On a fantastic evening at SMPS Maryland’s Fiesta Finale event 🍹, Arium AE proudly sponsored a raffle basket for a significant cause. Congratulations to Joanna Kozlowski, the “Taste of Maryland” basket winner! We hope you are enjoying all the iconic snacks Maryland is known for. 🦀   The celebratory event concluded with an extensive array of basket raffles to raise funds for a cause close to SMPS MD’s heart: finding a cure for MECP2 Duplication Syndrome. This extremely rare and severe genetic disorder currently has no cure, but promising clinical research is being conducted with the support of monetary donations. A long-time senior SMPS MD member’s daughter is currently battling this condition. For more information about MECP2 Duplication Syndrome, visit: https://curemds.org/. Arium would also like to congratulate Cynthia Stuber, Arium’s Marketing Director, on receiving SMPS MD’s 2024 Blue Heron Award. This prestigious award, presented to a senior-level professional with at least 15 years of industry experience, is given to a recipient who has made a significant impact on the chapter and the marketing profession within the A/E/C industries. Honorees promote and foster a marketing-led culture and actively contribute to the chapter’s success. Cynthia has served two 2-year terms as a board member and has been an avid supporter and mentor to her colleagues. 🎉 . . . #SMPSMD #mecp2duplication #communitymatters #Architects #Engineers #InteriorDesigners #AEdesign Brian Frels, AIA, Scott Walthour, PE, Stephanie Bounds Nunn

We’re setting the new standard for specialized spaces. ✨   Arium AE has over 36 years of experience designing workplace solutions for government and mission-critical clients. In Reston, Virginia, we recently provided architectural and engineering design services for the Leidos Annex office. The 68,177 SF project involved significant alterations to three floors of the 156,520 SF building. The first-floor space, previously multi-tenanted with retail and restaurant use, was combined into a single space with a street-level entrance. The building improvements included the creation of specialized workspaces and renovations to the main entry and lobby, multiple conference rooms, break areas, open collaboration areas, offices, assembly spaces, elevators, and AV walls.   The office exudes a contemporary and functional design. The break room's ceiling features an array of acoustic panels that add an artistic touch while enhancing comfort through noise reduction. Crisp white tables and chairs starkly contrast the vibrant purple carpet, creating a lively yet professional atmosphere. These unique design elements merge with the specialized workspaces, creating seamless branding throughout.   Arium AE’s collaborative studio brings together architects, interior designers, engineers, and planning professionals. We’d love to solve your next challenge and bring your vision to life. We're inspired! 🌟 Last week, The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Conference on Architecture & Design 2024 took place in Washington, DC, and offered excellent networking and learning opportunities. Stephanie Bounds Nunn, Arium AE’s principal, attended along with over 10,000 architects and design professionals nationwide. Stephanie started the conference with a workshop entitled “Envelope Transitions Detailing: Where Systems Meet.” This hands-on session explored methods and the evolution of materials and concluded with small groups re-designing a case study building, The Farnsworth House by Mies van der Rohe, to bring its envelope closer to current design compliance. Later that day, she visited the new Virginia Tech Innovation Campus building site in Alexandria, where each face of the building was designed to maximize solar exposure, a concept known as heliomorphic design. Over the three days attended, topics covered all aspects of the architectural profession, including design, materials, firm operations, and emerging architect professional services. From The Inspire Zone to the Innovate, Design, and Build Zones on the expo floor, new ideas and approaches, including ideas for social change, were presented. “The energy was exciting, and there were a lot of good conversations. I learned about a few new products and listened to some interesting panels with firms nationwide. Now it’s time to set some real action items.” said Stephanie.  . . #AIA24 #Architects #Engineers #InteriorDesigners #AEdesign
