San Quentin is pioneering a transformative approach called the “California Model,” inspired by the Scandinavian prison system with a focus on rehabilitation and human dignity. Guards now greet incarcerated individuals with "good morning," refer to them as "residents," and replenish toilet paper without waiting for requests. A proposed $239 million project aims to add classrooms, a fresh food market, and a coffee shop to San Quentin. Activities such as chess, kickball, and flag football between staff and residents are fostering new relationships. Slowly, this facility is starting to break down long-held stereotypes and institutional barriers, although these changes will take time to fully form. As Steven Warren, an incarcerated person at San Quentin, said, “We, the incarcerated person, are indoctrinated. The staff are as well.” #CaliforniaModel #SanQuentin #ARC https://lnkd.in/gXj-9-NU

About us
The Anti-Recidivism Coalition’s mission is to reduce incarceration, improve the outcomes of formerly incarcerated individuals, and to build healthier communities. The Anti-Recidivism Coalition (ARC) seeks to accomplish this Mission in a three-fold approach: (1) to advocate for fair and just policies that: reduce crime, decrease the use of incarceration, and serve the needs and well-being of formerly incarcerated people; (2) to provide services and resources to rebuild broken men and women affected by the criminal justice system that improves outcomes; and (3) to build healthier communities by returning motivated, mentally prepared, and high character men and women from incarceration to crime ridden neighborhoods to serve as ambassadors for change. In brief, ARC is a support network, a connection to services and support, and an advocate for just and fair policies.

ARC not only brought together, but also hosted, an amazing housing inter-agency collaborative meeting yesterday. Amity Foundation, Boys Republic, Healing Dialogue and Action, LA Room & Board, Impact Justice, RAMP LA, A New Direction, Hillsman, and Mass Liberation all took part in this wonderful day to strengthen the re-entry community to provide the best services for our membership! The goal of the meeting was to discuss ways we can collaborate to better support the Transitional Age Youth we serve. ARC bringing together these agencies, in the first of what will now be ongoing monthly collaborative measures, was a wonderful experience!

Meet the Formerly Incarcerated Superheroes on the Frontlines this Fire Season! As California wildfires increasingly threaten our communities, we want to celebrate the formerly incarcerated cadets and graduates of the Ventura Training Center (VTC). For the first time, all four teams at VTC are working together to extinguish the same fire, the Lake Fire in Santa Barbara. This groundbreaking collaboration between ARC, CDCR, CAL FIRE, and the California Conservation Corps, offers advanced firefighter training to people under parole supervision who previously served in CDCR fire camps, transforming their lives and giving them a second chance to become real-life heroes. #VenturaTrainingCenter #FireSeason #FireFighting

Don't buy into the Prop 47 fear! Kent Mendoza, ARC's Associate Director of Local Policy, captures the transformative impact of Prop 47 in the Guardian: “It’s one of those monumental pieces of legislation, and it got us over the hill for something we’ve been fighting for for so long. It gives counties an opportunity to be bold and approach these things differently. This is what allows us to maybe save 10 people who wouldn’t have this support.” https://lnkd.in/giPxt4Vw

We recently celebrated Sam Lewis’s five-year anniversary as the Chief Executive Officer of the Anti-Recidivism Coalition. Along with being an enormous achievement for any leader, this milestone is a testament to the need for more proximate leadership. In the last five years, Sam has used his unique perspective and connection to the work as a formerly incarcerated person, in combination with his many other abilities, to grow our inside-prison programming from 9 to 30 prisons, expand our workforce programs from just LA County to counties all over the state, create a Youth Development department, pass over 20 bills, and 3x the size of our organization to 160 employees and counting, over 80% of whom are systems impacted as well. This is what happens when we empower the people who GET IT most. Congratulations Sam and thank you for your leadership. #ProximateLeadership #AntiRecidivismCoalition #LeadingByExample #HappyFiveYears

One of the five pillars for ARC membership is a "willingness to be of service." And each month, we come together as a community to uphold that pillar. This June, ARC members and staff partnered with @HDAHealing to clean up Dockweiler Beach and, together, collected over a quarter mile of trash! 🌍✨ A special thanks to @HealTheBay for their support. And let's keep making a difference and being of service, one beach at a time! 🏖️❤️ #BeachCleanup #Community #HealTheBay #EndlessPossibilities #ARC #TogetherWeCan #Service
