Every flight is dynamic. Pilots are constantly working to adapt flight plans and operations to meet changing weather, traffic, and airspace demands. Only 1 out of every 10 flights conform to the plan originally entered into an aircraft’s flight management system. The work of flying a plane, adapting to changing flight plans, and communicating with air traffic control, other airline staff, and passengers can create high workloads. Pilots split duties during high workload periods and serve as an important check on the work of the other to verify information and actions. Many military pilots become airline pilots, and the airline industry has found that pilots from such a rigid training program are well prepared to join the ranks of commercial airline pilots. Military pilots wishing to transition to an airline must complete a military knowledge test to be issued a commercial pilot certificate which is required as a prerequisite for the ATP certificate.
