Like all of Baltimore and the country, I woke up early Tuesday to the tragic news of the Key Bridge collapse. We honor the eight construction workers from Brawner Builders who were directly impacted, six of whom lost their lives. They were hardworking individuals, providing for their families, and their loss will be felt by their families and community forever. But amidst the darkness, there is always light. We have learned of things that went right and saved many lives. During the NTSB press conference last night, we learned that the Bay Pilot radioed a Mayday - and the Pilot Office heard it. The Pilot Office had the presence of mind to call the MdTA Police Duty Officer, who was on duty and radioed two police officers to stop all bridge traffic. These officers were able to stop bridge traffic within two minutes. If any of these actions were missed, if the Duty Officer was inattentive, if the officers had been busy with other duties, many more lives would have been lost. As we mourn the loss, we also celebrate the small victories given to us by hardworking public servants and service workers who serve as a backbone of our society.
