I personally think designers should focus more on research as well this will help to bring power to the design. When designers know who they are presenting to, they can make sure that it fits their requirements, preferences, and expectations. Being a good designer is one thing but being both a good designer and researcher is a powerful duo. There is no such thing as 'too much' research or useless research. It might not come in handy now but maybe later it will help you establish connections or prove a point.
