I’d say you need to focus on key performance measures in three areas of the organization to see signs of potential performance issues 1. Quality indicators 2. Customer Satisfaction 3. Financial Performance These indicators should be compared to historical performance on a monthly and 12 month moving sum basis to identify trends over time. I’d also suggest you benchmark these indicators to other healthcare systems to identify opportunities for improvement on a pro-active basis. I also think that employee satisfaction levels are an important indicator of success of the organization. Employee engagement measures can indicate future issues with performance. My experience tells me that Continuous Performance Improvement is the key!!!!

In my experience, observing team dynamics are more insightful into understanding individual employees than one might consider; tension or visible discomfort during interactions can signal internal concerns. Additionally, regularly monitoring work habits, such as the quality of documentation and adherence to protocols, can help identify inconsistencies that suggest a team member is struggling. The last indicator are clientele; are patients and clients receiving the same quality of care from your employees? Why or why not?

I say, get feedback from the most unrefined source: conduct regular one-on-one meetings to understand concerns at the source, and then use anonymous surveys for more candid insights on workload and team dynamics. Patient/client feedback highlights care delivery shortcomings, while peer feedback fosters continuous improvement. Regularly review and act on this feedback network to build trust, address issues promptly, and enhance team performance and patient care.

Ensure your choices are driven by data insights rather than fitting data to preconceived notions. By thoroughly analyzing the outcomes of changes, you can identify root causes and implement targeted solutions to improve team performance and patient care.

Know the human beings that you work with both Management, Physicians, Front frontline caregivers. Start getting to them the moment you first walk in the door, so that when major change and immediate solutions need to be made; if you know the people you'll together reach the solution(s), and not every day 2-hour emergency meetings are necessary.
