In a global world, language barriers would always exist and written communication being faceless is the biggest contributor to that. In any such situation its always helpful to have - A face to face conversation even if its virtual - Use a translator (human) or digital to present the material for the meeting in language the team understands - Try to be sensitive to their culture and avoid using phrases, words or sign language which may be offensive - Use expressions and hand gestures to facilitate a conversation - Speak slowly and let them speak. Take time to understand and then respond - don't have long meetings, keep conversations short and crisp

1. Active listening is key since we have to prioritize understanding the other person’s perspective, so we have to listen actively. 2. We have to speak slowly and simple words while speaking and this will allow the other person to understand our interpretations. 3. If we are presenting then we can use more visuals like screenshots, diagrams to illustrate what we are talking. 4. We have to be mindful of cultural differences that might impact communication styles and we have to be patient and respect each other. 5. If communication remains difficult, we can consider of involving a mediator who is fluent in both languages to mediate the discussion.

In my experience, it is critical to comprehension for all parties to be actively involved in the conversation. The best way to encourage active involvement, is to encourage questions, prompting validation and verification that all sides are using the same "lingo" with the same understanding. This also supports an environment of trust.

Being patient and caring when facing language (or any other type of) barriers is worthy and will be paid back many-fold when you have need of the same in similar situations. For instance, if a language barrier exists on one side, remember that it also exists on the other side, and you may seem to the other person to be slow on the uptake to their questions. With your patience and sympathy, you encourage a similar attitude on all sides, thus generating a much tighter team ethos. I've seen this often where a team in another language center would spend the extra effort to work well with our team because our team had the good and patient attitude.

This is a multi way thing. Two which stood out. A reluctance to give what is perceived as bad news for example does not carry well into a work environment. Being aware that it may be a cultural thing can help with coaching. Silence does not mean agreement. Being loud does not always mean a person is very angry or incompetent. Being aware how you may be viewed in another culture is important but again on the other side understanding that it could be the norm in there own culture. I went through some joint US, Australian, UK and Asia team members cultural training to ensure it was not just one way but all cultures being aware of each others. Even going from US to UK cultures was an eye opener and a lot of fun.

Use tools or extensions that transcribes the context and translate if needed. Now a days there are lot of powerful AI tools and extensions that can help us reduce these barriers, yet these are not robust. So use the above mentioned ways to ensure right understandings.

Some very good points, I had a really good trainer in this area and one of the key things was to discard a lot of what I was taught and knew with regards to communication. We are taught to grow vocabulary, to be detailed and expressive with language, know more words and being able to vary them is seen as an intellectual positive. That's what you need to throw away as a starting point. Simple, clear, consistent language, reduce your vocabulary massively. Find a word that works, stick with it, use it every time. Synonyms are bad, not good, harmful for example, no synonyms are bad, bad and bad. That is just a starting point, many other aspects, for me slowing down my talking is one I still need to actively focus on.
