Since my mom was a teacher too, she advised me to get my Masters degree right from the get go. So that’s what I did. My first three years of teaching also entailed evening classes. I am so glad that I did it right away as that allowed me to build on that for years to come and move up on teaching pay scales significantly.

Studies suggest that referrals account for 30-50% of all new hires. Continuing my education added more relevant, current people to my existing network and connections. Every time I added a degree or a certificate or a course or attended a workshop, I build new relationships. These relationships turned into referrals and got me a job, career breaks, wonderful mentors and a fellowship of like-minded people. When I did my MA, my faculty connected me to a teaching position. I was able to give back too to the network. I could refer and connect the right people to the right job. And as my network grew, so did my net worth. It's been a win-win! Try it. I am stepping out of the classroom and (hopefully) into the Ed Tech space. I can use many of the skills I have acquired though teaching and become a SME for a company. I am taking an L & D class to fill in some gaps in my skillset. I have a sense of renewal and excitement about working. I am challenging myself and have committed to lifelong learning. It is exciting to think of the new directions in which my career could grow.

Exploring new career paths can be daunting, but equipping yourself with the necessary skills through continued education makes the leap more manageable. Years ago, I began my college career as a Business-Marketing major. I realized quickly that the major wasn't for me, but I didn't quite know what was. I perused the general education courses to meet 1st and 2nd year gen ed requirements, and ended up enrolling in a plethora or child development and psych courses. 10 years, 2 degrees and 1 credential later, I've found my home in the education field.

Having the "Lifelong Learner" mindset helps you to adapt to changing needs and demands. If you're an educator that values forward progress of your own thinking, you will easily adapt to changes in educational philosophy. I am a reading specialist and 10 years ago I was trained in Reading Recovery, which is a very whole language/balanced literacy based program. Now that the Science of Reading has become more prominent, the way in which we teach students to read has completely changed. I have gotten new training (Orton-Gillingham) and it is very different from my previous certification. Understanding the need for change and the willingness to do what is best for students is necessary.

An example I have seen is the fast advancement of AI and how it is being a disruptor in all industries. Technology will always advance faster than we can keep up and it is so important to be ahead of the curve

We often talk about professional learning but rarely personal development. Working on ourselves and learning to balance this with our professional life allows us to be happier and serve better as well. A happy teacher has happy students!

Living and working with a positive attitude pays two fold. You can either build positive relationships in each role, school and country you work in or you can work against yourself and not! I highly recommend the first choice. It has served me well.

In the field of education, people should always be learning. Continually self-improvement doesn't necessarily mean getting an advanced degree, but it is definitely an option that should be considered. Especially if a person plans to move into administration or counseling, an advanced degree is most likely a requirement of the position. I have two Master's degrees and will probably begin working on a third one in the coming year.
