Identifying the root cause in a conflict is imperative. Open communication and active listening are necessary, but must happen in a safe environment. This is why it’s critical for leaders to create a space where solutions are provided for mistakes versus magnification. When your team is comfortable communicating, conflict resolution is not only possible, but productive as well.

Root cause diagnosis transforms conflict from being about individuals to addressing systemic shortcomings that the team can collectively fix at a new equilibrium. 1. Gets to the source - Surface conflicts are usually symptoms of deeper issues like poor communication, lack of role clarity, perceived slights, etc. Addressing symptoms will yield temporary relief. Tackling the root issue can permanently resolve conflicts. 2. Avoids assumptions 3. Enables specificity 4. Shifts perspectives - deescalates emotions. 5. Drives engagement - team participation in framing the problem statement jointly results in shared ownership of designing appropriate solutions. Siloes get dismantled.

Establish the common purpose and work backwards 1. Identify the different perspectives. 2. Propose a solution that ensures all parties' thoughts and feelings are validated. The human need for validation is at the core of conflicts.

It is important to focus on the problem rather than on the person. Identify the problem and concentrate on potential solutions. It might be necessary to establish new processes. (May it require upgraded systems or software etc). It is also helpful to keep track of the number of conflicts or pertinent problems. Maintaining a positive and respectful attitude is crucial. The goals of the team and organization should remain focused.

It's important to check unconscious biases here as this might have you labelling someone based on historical knowledge which might be irrelevant to the current situation.

Attacking one person is never a solution..always find a solution to the problem..positive approach with respecting everyone feelings is the best approach..

Defuses tensions - balances emotions and repairs working relationships 2. Sustains collaboration 3. Solves holistically - Broad relevance drives adoption 4. Distributes accountability - collective ownership cement resolutions 5. Optimizes resources - Aligning on trade-offs to serve varying interests maximizes total utility from available resources. 6. Reinforces/rebuilds damaged trust Essentially, win-win conflict resolution sets the stage for cooperative teams to emerge stronger by turning divides into opportunities for inclusive progress.

To achieve a win-win solution, you also need to be willing to have tough conversations and make tough decisions while putting emotions and biases aside.

More often than not, a Win - Win is not possible in a conflict situation. If something that has escalated into conflict means you’re already in a loss situation through time and EQ. Often these situations where there is an element of wrong you sometimes need to acknowledge that it is down to a person and not situation. There is then of course another layer of the onion to peel back as to why the person has chosen conflict, which involves the responsible person of managing the conflict situation becoming a counsellor as opposed to focusing on business. So yes, try to resolve , but remember people should understand that time is a finite resource . Decisions need to sometimes be taken that are perhaps not holistic but required.

A win-win resolution is characterized by addressing the needs and interests of each side, all while preserving the relationship and overall team harmony. Clearly outlining expectations, responsibilities, and boundaries is crucial, and the devised solution should adhere to the principles of being specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely (SMART). This ensures a comprehensive and effective resolution that benefits both parties involved.

In the fourth phase of conflict resolution, execute the agreed-upon solution by taking decisive actions and honoring commitments. Subsequently, regularly follow up by maintaining open communication with the involved parties, offering constructive feedback, and acknowledging achievements. This implementation and follow-up process is crucial not only for ensuring conflict resolution and the effectiveness of the solution but also for fostering a culture of trust and confidence among team members.

As my employer likes to remind us, "disagree and commit." If you are focused so much on how you would have done something else, and you've made that clear and were still turned down, you've lost the fight; to win as a team, you need to move forward with what was agreed on. Otherwise you're building distrust and holding everyone back.

In my experience if you choose the win-win option your other team members will view you as a team player since they won't believe that you are impartial when settling disputes. In the future, if the similar circumstance occurs, your team will come to you for assistance.

Problem: I'm gaining weight. Solution: Eat right and exercise. In the problem/solution example above though, the current lifestyle that causes the problem is the habit. Changing the habit is harder than doing the same thing. Change is not the path of least resistance; so we stay with our old ways. We live with the problem even though we know how to fix it, do always stick with the solution. Follow-up to make sure everyone is working towards the solution. People need time to make the solution a new habit. Guide them through this transition phase to keep them on track. Plus, your interest speaks volumes as to the importance of the solution. If you lose interest, so does everybody else.

Leaders’ partiality is one of the major causes of conflicts within teams. When employees sense they are marginalized, that their efforts are unappreciated, unhealthy competitiveness kicks in and intoxicates the work environment. Sometimes, the partiality is unintentional. The leader might unconsciously prefer to work closely with few team members for their effectiveness and result-orientation making them standout, and unknowingly demotivate others. This can encompass various domains, such as professional skills, personal traits, leadership abilities, communication skills, technical proficiencies, or any other aspect that requires development to achieve desired goals or outcomes.Hence one should always keep yourself updated with the role and job you carry and improve your skills which will help you in your day to day job at work. There are many platforms for one to upgrade their knowledge and many organisations do provide employee self learning skills and development.

There were moments when I found it was best to bring both parties into my office and share a professional, face to face conversation to allow each to have their viewpoint heard by the other. In every instance, the individuals issues were resolved simply by eliminating the "middle man"!

Focus less on your own ego and wounded pride and more on how this conflict impacts the team as a whole. Know when to hold 'em, and when to fold 'em, and don't hold grudges if you folded.

You have to meet people where they are in life, not where you want them to be or hope them to be. You definitely cannot expect them to be somewhere they aren’t, experience wise, just by having someone like you in their life. This doesn’t just apply to business, but in all personal relationships with human beings.
