All the methods described above are useful. However, we still need a metaprocess to select the tool(s) that best fit your context. First, what is the meaning of 'improvement' and what is the scope of 'research and development'? It may range from a small improvement in a narrow scope to a radical change in the entire ecosystem. At one end, simple visual inspection of a trend chart will suffice. At the other, you may need to map the entire system and conduct controlled experiments. Second, understand the limitations on data, data quality, cost of data, etc. Establish criteria upfront so that you neither short change the exercise, nor goldplate it. Lastly, ensure that your entire approach is human centric -- yes, even in the era of AI.
