How can virtual team building reduce conflict?

Investing in virtual team-building initiatives offers organizations a multitude of benefits. By providing opportunities for collaboration on projects, team members gain a deeper understanding of each other's perspectives and clarify roles and responsibilities. Regular virtual meetings facilitate trust-building and clarify misunderstandings, reducing the likelihood of conflicts arising from miscommunication. Additionally, virtual team-building activities promote a sense of belonging and cultural awareness among team members.

A common oversight that can lead to (unhealthy) conflict in virtual teams is (only) focusing on to-dos and overlooking the do-nots. Being clear about what colleagues shouldn't do provides boundaries. The cost of lacking clear boundaries can be higher in virtual teams than in-person teams as there are less opportunities to clarify misunderstandings and catch things before they go wrong. Here are 3 simple ways to provide boundaries for virtual teams; 1. Create a team charter drawing on the input of all colleagues. 2. As well as the do-s, define the do-nots. 3. Regularly evaluate the team culture against the charter and make necessary changes for better alignment.

O la gente sabe lo que tiene que hacer y tiene los recursos para poder hacerlo o hay muchas posibilidades de que se caiga la productividad en este tipo de colaboración - siempre dependiendo del área o industria a la que se dedique. Para mí, no hay un modelo perfecto y me considero un defensor del modelo remoto por las posibilidades que abre, pero está claro que el modelo remoto implica mayor comunicación diaria, objetivos más claros y una visión más a medio plazo. Having run hundreds of online Team Building events during lockdown, with groups from 10 to 1000, I could write a book about the benefits to teams of virtual Team Building. One thing I noticed straight away was, whatever the hierarchy of the organisation, we all have the same sized Zoom window. We instantly become a mosaic of equality. We morph into a homogenised grid of diversity. We are, to use a dog eared metaphor, all in the same boat. This doesn't mean there won't be hiccups and challenging times, as the human experience is tricky and nuanced. But, it does speak to the importance of moving towards conflict rather than away from it.

Virtual teams are a great way to work and may dominate the future. Having the team in one place with free flowing communication can be quick and easy with tools of today. Meetings are replaced by chat posts, decisions are taken or given in a quick time, transparency is ensured with everyone communicating regarding the project/work with everyone else in the team. All this is possible with the right tool.

Es necesario en la resolución de conflictos potencializar las habilidades sociales y hacerla evidentes en la gestión diaria, en donde se discutan y se abran puertas a conversaciones incomodas e incluso a la gestión de relacionamientos más alla de lo transaccional. Apreciar y dar uso a las herramientas al alcance, llamadas , videollamadas, espacios abiertos, etc. Desde el uso de aplicaciones de manera preventiva hasta correctivas o aprendizajes.

A wise employee summed up the effectiveness of email communication this way: “It’s for relaying information, not having a discussion.” That’s what in-person meetings and phone calls are for. Likewise, project management tools are for seeing what needs to be done to meet goals. Don’t underestimate the power of virtual meetings. They’re distinct from webinars, which are like video emails in that they’re for delivering knowledge. But when planned and executed well, they can encourage authentic communication, brainstorming, and more.

Conflicts are inherent part of any team. We need to keep a watch as to when they become unhealthy. When we say ‘team building’, we need to understand what it means. It is much more than an activity we do or the tools we use. It’s all about creating a feeling of trust among the team members. That’s the most important component of the team work. It is easier said than done to build that trust. It takes time, patience and persistence to build trust. We need to demonstrate as to why it is important. We need to start by giving them a purpose and empowerment. We need to trust them before they could trust us. Then creating an environment in a way that trust gets created and evolved over a period of time.

In my experience, implementing virtual team building activities such as regular check-ins with clear agendas, rotating presentations, and mixing formal and informal interactions has significantly reduced conflict within remote teams. These activities promote open communication, clarify roles and expectations, strengthen relationships, develop conflict resolution skills, and foster a culture of diversity and inclusion. As a result, team members feel more connected, engaged, and supported, leading to higher productivity and better outcomes...!!

Regular check-ins are effective when implemented on three levels: 1. Each person checking in with themselves as a form of self-accountability. i.e., taking ownership of their emotions, choices, and actions. 2. The manager checks in with each individual and has conversations so each person can share openly and honestly their experience in working with one another. 3. A group check-in is when team members can share grievances and work towards resolving any lingering dramas and conflicts that prevent forward moments and feed into stagnation.

Regular check ins work well. The team can book this in their calendars, no surprises. Set clear agenda's. Time allocation, purpose and action items. Depending on the agenda you may want to rotate and have a team member present on current topic, challenges or success. Mix it up a bit but stay to agenda and purpose.

Having more consistency amongst team members is the best solution to reducing conflict. Allowing team members to have more touch bases together, overcoming obstacles, or brainstorming are all opportunities to improving relationships in the long run. Think about any job you have ever had, people are usually slightly concerned about “what if I don’t make any friends, or worse… what if I don’t like the people there” BUT usually, just by being in the same environment, teams mesh in the long run.

Cultures are defined by their teams' ability to resolve conflict, compromise, and achieve a shared vision. Many variables contribute to building this type of culture; the ones that do it best are those who commit to developing their employees as compassionate, team-focused individuals and embrace humility as part of the growth process.

Setting successful team goals Understand the short-term and long-term goals of the company. Collaborate with the team to develop a strategy to meet these goals. Set SMART goals. Tie individual goals with incentives and the overall goals of the company. Set timelines to achieve the goals. Track the progress.

In Proverbs 29:18 it states “ Where there is no vision, the people perish.” Wisdom is the application of knowledge applied to a project that is based upon the faith that the vision presented has high potential. It is the road map toward a specific goal.

By aligning around a common goal and set of values, team members can navigate disagreements with the team’s purpose in mind, promoting a positive work environment. Según mi experiencia, la formación de conflictos en los equipos ocurren fundamentalmente por dos razones: la falta de comunicación, y el no asumir los roles por parte de todos los miembros del equipo. A veces la segunda es consecuencia de la primera. Es fundamental el realizar una comunicación cercana y continuada, el definir bien los roles y el que de alguna manera todos los componentes den el conforme al rol asignado. Para ello es fundamental que quede claro que resultado final depende de absolutamente todos los componentes, y que ninguno es más importante que otros, sino que todos son necesarios.

I love the concept of team building as a way to move through conflict, so I built programs and design methodologies to help teams do this. :) In my experience, companies prioritizing team building and teaching teams fundamental communication and resolution skills create lasting cultures. With this being said, team building isn't meant to be a quick hitter. It requires consistency throughout the company's growth process and a willingness to be nimble and flexible, as its pain points will inevitably change over time.

The best teams trust each other. They do not always agree and the best teams I have been on did not kiss the ring of the most senior leaders on the team but engage in healthy and respectful challenge. In a virtual environment being on camera contributes to know where everyone is by the expressions on face, intent that goes beyond words and the engagement that can be witnessed. When teams trust, better plans are created and commitment levels are bolstered.
