I find it useful to engage online. I have participated in several weekly and monthly webinar series that have helped me in my professional development as a case manager. In addition it's, a great way to engage with other case managers and non profits through out the country to hear and share ideas on how to better serve vulnerable populations.

I have found it useful attending community events, conferences and mo they meetings. I enjoy conferences the most becuase the break out sessions are often infor.ative and educational. I always leave a co ferenc with fresh ideas and methods for better serving the families I work with.

Traveling to events can be cost prohibitive, so I always look for those who offer a virtual event or recorded sessions to review after the fact. New topics and interesting concepts that can be integrated into my practice are now more available than ever before!

I find keeping an updated binder to be helpful. I go through it every month and add/remove anything that maybe outdated. I keep tabs for community events and engagements, resources and referrals, agency contacts, updated housing and employment guides and printed tool kits from trainings or webinars I attended.

In my present role, our record system continues to evolve with input from clinicians along with data driven informatics and IT supports. By merging data with clinical expertise, one is more readily able to identify gaps in care, increasing risk economics, and have more intuitive information to promote valuable perspectives to drive interventions and who needs them most. Be sure to tap into IT, informatics, and data analytics team members to have conversations about how clinical roles and data can be bridged to provide meaningful use data. It is then that one can truly start having powerful insights to drive quality care improvements, increase value, and have elevated outcomes for the individuals we provide care for.

The internet remains an invaluable source for research into latest caselaw, both in relation to client advice as well in pursuing outstanding claims. With the all too common risk of time bars, effective case management to ensure accurate claims data is accurately maintained, readily accessible and updated is a vital part of the job, as are daily checks of such data to ensure nothing is missed & overlooked. Computers remain ideal for this purpose.

I enjoy being a mentor. I’ve held positions as field instructor for MSW students in their field placements. I’ve supervised MSW professionals to meet the qualifications for licensure. In all these roles I teach in a way they can remember. I learn so much from my mentees. It’s one of the more rewarding aspects of my career.

Making sure you are a member of a professional community. Joining professional associations often have the benefit of mailing lists, newlettres, and publications with new research. It is a good way to make sure your professional credits are up to date. If you have an interest in the things other members of your community are doing, such as new medications for trauma, often there are education activities that you can attend.

Taking the initiative to participate in continuous education on an ongoing basis is a necessity to overall professional growth. Science continuously evolves so, in order to ensure one is providing the most effective and evidenced-based approaches, one must remain well informed in all areas that relate to the population one serves. In today’s world, there are many methods/platforms for obtaining continuous education whether it be medical journals, peer reviews, webinars, or audio research journals.

I believe it’s important to continue to engage in personal development and enhance skills and abilities to stay abreast of every changing landscape of substance abuse education, treatment and processes.

LinkedIn learning is giving me the opportunity to explore courses that can hone my skills and provide access to new aspects of the business of healthcare. Making the effort to expand your mind past the confines of your specific job description sparks creativity and brings personal statisfaction.

It’s important to reflect regularly to assess effectiveness and inventory assets and shortcomings. Staying abreast of opportunities to improve skills, outcomes and approaches to case management. Regularly inventory outcomes and define areas that would benefit from change.

Reflection is a largely underrated and oft forgotten tool for growth and development not only professionally but personally, too. Getting into the practice of setting aside some time each week to review tasks and cases you’ve been engaged in allows for an opportunity to be objective. Identifying “wins” with the members we engage with but also in seeing where we may have approached a direction better can open one to new approaches. I highly encourage team based reflection also. Receiving feedback from others can help us see new perspectives for us to understand how we can best approach change and improve the value of the care we deliver.

One thing I have found especially helpful throughout my career is networking. I utilised it to gain employment and regularly use it to connect with the services needed to support clients. Networking can feel like it takes time out of client support and professional obligations but there is nothing better than connecting the right support with the right person. Effective network engagement can provide additional perspectives and lead to increasingly creative solutions to current sector initiatives.

In our increasingly remote work environments, we are losing the convenience that comes from the ability to have conversations with people and learn from one another in a more casual manner. This shift necessitates building a strong network of individuals with diverse experience and skills that you can trust and rely on to help expand you knowledge base of what is available in terms of resources and what best-practices are emerging or shifting. By recognizing the value that other disciplines bring to the table, case managers are able to collaborate more effectively to identify strategies to meet the needs of those they are serving in a more holistic and proactive manner and empower them with diverse tools and resources.

One thing I found helpful, networking broadens our horizons and completing our strengths in facing various challenges in the future.

I have a belief that you learn something everyday, no matter how small or inconspicuous it may seem! Growth and learning happens daily and either you adapt and acknowledge or became stale and stationary.

I believe one of the most valuable ways to stay up-to-date with the changes and influences affecting the people you work with is to listen. Listen to the individuals in front of you, hear their voices, and embrace what they tell you with an open mind and heart. Don't seek to know the answer; seek to understand. Through that understanding and the empathy you show, you will grow not only as a case manager but also as a person.

In today’s fast paced world of health care and case management, it’s absolutely vital to constantly be looking and thinking “outside the box” for innovation and creative ways to grow, adapt, and build one’s own repertoire. If, for example, you engage in inpatient acute care case management, consider attending CE and networking events that offer case management skills in other pathways. Seeking to learn about utilization management or worker’s compensation or other specialty areas, it will only broaden your horizon and comfort level when those types of cases might arise. It’s so important to not pigeon hole or silo oneself as we may be presented with cases that require us to think creatively and engage with our network connections.

You learn ever more through useful contacts &, research. Qualifications are one thing, but you also need the necessary experience & commitment to do a good job, avoid risk of costly mistakes, as you need to learn from any mistakes, not to risk repetition. Needs be to keep accurate readily & easily available records & updates & to check their accuracy regularily. Ensuring you can do a good job remains a continuing learning & checking curve. .
