Networking is not something accountants are natural at. My approach is to attend networking events with other professionals in collaborative fields. For example, attorneys, investment bankers, insurance brokers, and personal investment advisors. These individuals already have clients who may need my services. They are always willing to refer as it makes them look good. Warm referrals generally mean business with any "selling." These folks are also keen to have me refer work to them, so the mutual reciprocity cerates a very easy, friendly environment where everyone is keen to help each other. No one tries to avoid you just in case you try and "sell" them.
