Your team is divided on the product vision. How will you unite them towards common goals?

Effective listening is the foundation of aligning your team's vision. By creating a safe and non-judgmental space, you encourage open sharing of thoughts and ideas. Recognizing the value in each perspective and validating concerns fosters trust and Fosters a sense of ownership. This collaborative approach not only bridges the gap in vision but also harnesses the collective wisdom of the team, leading to a more refined and successful product direction. By actively listening and valuing diverse perspectives, you build a united and driven team.

When there are ten members in a team for example it is not ten members but the minds of ten that works so uniquely that you cannot actually comprehend what exactly is running in each of their own minds at anytime. I usually be rhetoric about my goals right from the beginning and reiterate for every release and understand how are we aligning with the goal. This helps to iron out the differences between what is being built vs what needs to be achieved in long term. Also, there need to be a safe space for the entire team to voice out their concerns, fears, non-alignment, and even non-belief about the team objectives and as a PM it’s our responsibility to address them without reservations and vetoing it.

First of all, having a divided opinion is a far better outcome than no opinion. This means that team members are vested in the vision and want to make it a success. Creating a safe environment where team members can share perspective without being given labels is the most essential step. Acknowledging the differences and not suppressing is the second most important. Eventually having a set of clearly defined and measure able goals to go after will help the team members reconcile differences and work towards a common vision.

While incorporating diverse viewpoints, ensure the refined vision maintains a clear focus on the "why" behind the product. A compelling vision should not just describe what the product does, but the impact it aims to create and the problem it solves. Refine the vision statement to articulate this purpose in a way that resonates with and motivates the team. By understanding the "why," the team will be better equipped to see the bigger picture and feel a sense of purpose in their contributions to the product's success.

The team needs to be clear about the KPIs to be achieved with a focus on helping the organization move forward positively. With a critical eye, the team needs to define clear objectives in that same direction.

With the refined vision in place, turn it into clear, actionable goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound (SMART). Setting SMART goals gives the team a clear roadmap of what success looks like and how to get there. This clarity unites the team, helping them work towards common objectives with a shared understanding of the expected outcomes, ensuring everyone is aligned and focused on the same targets.

Create a shared document or whiteboard that outlines the product vision, goals, and key performance indicators (KPIs). Look for areas of agreement and shared interests. Emphasize the common purpose and the reasons why you're working together.

As a product manager, one of your key responsibilities is to define and maintain the product vision, which articulates the ultimate purpose of the product. Without a clear vision, your team may lack context, leading to division as each member forms their own interpretation. To align your team with a shared vision, I recommend running a collaborative workshop. My favorite is the “10 for 10” exercise: each team member writes 10 ideas on sticky notes, then everyone uses 10 dots to vote on their favorites. After several rounds, the team converges on a shared vision that everyone can support. It’s incredibly fun, effective, and usually take about 15-30 minutes, depending on the number of people involved.

Utilize tools like Miro to create boards and do exercises as a team to collaborate on the product vision. It is very important for all parties (product managers, developers, designers etc) are all aligned and on the same page regarding the product vision. If anyone of these or potentially others as well, are not aligned and agree on the same vision, collaboration will become a challenge for the team and coming to collective decisions regarding the future of the product will be even more of a challenge.

Together, prioritize features and tasks that support the product vision. Focus on the most critical elements that drive progress.

Address challenges head-on and collaboratively. - Vision Reinforcement: Frame updates within the larger vision. Remind everyone of the "why" behind the work.

Explain why it matters and how it fits into the bigger picture. Involve the team in refining that vision—when they help shape it, they’ll feel more invested.
