How can a team leader integrate sustainability into daily work?

Team leaders can be strong enablers to help integrate sustainability not just in their work, but also help their team in the same. To achieve this, it’s important to educate the team on the sustainability (the science) and its impact on the environment. This can be done by discussing topics like climate change, biodiversity loss, planetary boundaries etc. The next step is to align sustainability with the organization’s and team’s goals, say for example, helping them understand the net zero ambitions set by the company. Finally, setting up systems and best practices with different tools to measure and assess their activities. By following these steps, team leaders can help build a culture of sustainability in their organisation.

A team leader integrates sustainability by setting clear goals aligned with organizational values. Promote eco-friendly practices, incorporate sustainable frameworks in projects, and foster a culture of innovation for green solutions. Regularly assess impact through key performance indicators, measuring resource consumption and waste reduction. I joined a re­search project all about bringing sustainability to eve­ryday work. It looked at how an online learning platform could improve­ the skills and training of Saudi women. The aim is to boost sustainable­ development. The­ study dug into obstacles, needs, and the­ overall effects of adde­d sustainable habits. A detailed analytic approach he­lped make sense­ of the situation and its many parts. In our test group of 410 women, training took place­ via an online platform built just for this study, using the MOOC system.

The crucial step for integrating sustainability into our daily work is to understand, "why?" As a team lead, it's my responsibility to discuss the importance of sustainability and related topics like climate change, biodiversity loss, soil extinction, etc., with the team. The team lead must make everyone understand that we all have a role to play in the progress towards sustainability. With the help of the lead HR, the team lead can conduct weekly sessions and quizzes on this to create more awareness. Once people understand why it is important, we can ask them for small actions that we all can do daily while working. After collecting all the ideas, we can refine it and add the team lead's vision to come up with a feasible solution.

Creative leadership is the most vital component to drive any sustainability initiative, project in the team and in the organization. First principles of equity, ensure each and every member is represented and duly acknowledged for their efforts from minute to large inputs. This ensures that each and every team member's role, function and contribution is vital in the common collective. Add a surprise factor, extend positive affirmation when it is least expected. Be totally objective, leaders should not have any favorites, in sustainability it is the bottom ups approach, celebrate new members who have joined recently to continue to nurture fresh perspectives, ideas and collaborations. Most importantly, be transparent in communication

It is very important to establish the importance of sustainability in the context of the organisation and its impact. Everyone impacts & is impacted by sustainability issues so it is important to identify the aspects that matter to your team the most. During team meetings or initial sessions where any project is established, team lead should urge the team to be conscious of making the project as sustainable as possible. Find and use sustainable alternatives in things like tech, marketing or production systems. Also be conscious of social impact issues in the whole process.
