Here's how you can navigate the potential drawbacks of relying too heavily on new writing technologies.

Think of your pen, paper and time as an instrument, A musical instrument. Then the concept of practice makes sense. Then by way of practice lean to tune your craft with exercises and rudiments. To prime the pnp so to speak find examples online, don't overdo it; as I have found once you start an exercise the process suggests other things to do. Weaknesses may emerge in sentence construction or voicing, and right there you have a new aspcet to work on a sd strengthen. ~TEU

Lean on AI by all means, but don’t hand over total control of your writing. The only way you’ll be able to judge if it’s doing a good job is to know what good and bad look like. There’s also another risk of relying on it too. If its output reads well, we assume it’s fine. (That’s the fluency heuristic at play.) This is a particular issue when it’s working with our own inputs. We recognise the facts we’ve given it, see the flowing prose, and feel confident to hit Send. (Thanks to confirmation bias.) It’s only later, once we’ve got more distance, that we often notice that it’s not actually saying what we meant. Unfortunately, by then it’s too late.

This can be a black hole, especially for the artist personality. Self Esteem issues can feed over use of these new learning offers, webinars (especially the "free" ones!). For writing, creativity, marketing etc. Evaluate the time spent pursing this new stuff vs writing your own stuff, looking at your motivation, distractions and creative blocks. As we are assaulted by new tech tools and especially the brokers of said tools. Be proactive. There is no free lunch. (how about a writing exercise to use as many clichés as possible and still make sense? 🤣) Amid the noisome assault of the new writing tools tech has to offer, the BEST writing tool you can get is a cute little book (first published in 1919) "The Elements of Style" by Strunck and White. The illustrated version. Rest Assured it will be a good while until AI catches up to the brilliance of nuance, the simple power of a well constructed sentence. Amen. ~TEU

You can train your own private GPT to write in your unique voice by uploading a bunch of your best writing samples. I love the idea of writing my own piece, but also asking my personally trained GPT for their version. That way, I have a janky clone of myself that's able to offer alternatives and throw up new creative ideas. We can collaborate and explore new possibilities.
