Here's how you can make a lasting impression and stand out during a PR internship.

If you want to stand out and not just be another intern, then be creative and come up with ideas so wild they can’t be ignored. But for those ideas to really hit the mark, you need another superpower: empathy. You must truly connect with others, understand their needs, and pick up on the subtle cues. If you do the job well, the story you offer will be unique, captivating, and distinguishing. Don’t be afraid to pitch it, because public relations is a theater, sometimes intimidating.

During a PR internship, stand out by embracing storytelling and immersing yourself in the brands or clients you work with. Understand their mission, values, and audience to propose fresh, emotionally resonant story ideas. Leverage the latest PR technologies and platforms, showcasing your digital savvy by integrating tools like media monitoring and social media analytics to enhance efficiency and results. Focus on delivering tangible outcomes, tracking your contributions and their impact. Highlight your unique skills, whether in research, content or writing. Seek and apply feedback to refine your approach, demonstrating commitment to professional growth. This approach will ensure an individual to make a lasting impression.

Be sincere. Be bold. Be authentic. It's so rare that it's worth noting. You'll stay in people's minds, just for a while. Until the next time.

A PR intern should be a reasonable observer. They must look at every detail of the client's needs and what they want. It is also essential to understand the company's brand and product lines where the intern works. Finally, the intern needs to develop storytelling ability, which is the key to bridging the gaps between the client's demand and the PR company's input.

Para mi siempre ha sido fundamental la calidad de las conexiones. Es clave hacer preguntas perspicaces y mostrar un interés genuino en el trabajo de los demás. Esto no solo nos ayudará a construir relaciones significativas, sino que también nos permitirá aprender de las experiencias y conocimientos de profesionales establecidos en el campo.

Build your network Take time to get to know your colleagues and build quality relationships, but don’t limit your network to just one team. Network broadly and outside of your discipline. Find mentors who can teach you valuable skills and share their experiences navigating their careers. Invite them to informational interviews and get advice on your career goals. Listening to others’ experiences can help you visualize your own career path. Attend networking events, meet-ups, and mixers at work and get to know the people within your company.

I don't think it's just attending events. A good way to start is to hold back, listen, observe and watch. Learn the organisation's structure and who to approach with different questions, such as detailed explanations, training and mentoring. I wouldn't make it a chore; I would try and inject as much fun as being a 'detective' in the beginning.

Siempre es un buen momento para aprender y aprehender; inspírate en quienes ya han realizado un camino. Lee y conversa con quienes saben mas; esto nos eleva y nos hace crecer a todos. Habla siempre en plural, haz sentir importante a tu equipo, socio o a quienes te rodean. Interésate por sus necesidades, tal vez tienes herramientas para compartir y viceversa.

It goes without saying that you will be dealing with social media in some form or facet within your career if you’re doing anything in PR. If you already have a career and they have clear goals for you, I would keep an open mind and dip your toe into learning a new software, but don’t let it affect your job. It may be a waste of time if you’re focusing on something that doesn’t really benefit you in your position at your job. If you have the capacity for it, absorb all you can. That way, when someone brings up an issue about the software you guys are using, you can be the bell of the ball and have an educated answer.

I agree with all points 100% but I am an advocate for creativity. A creative, only has to learn the basics and they start to have fun with their assignment. The fresh energy and ideas, as tailored to or complimentary to your organization's story. A creative is all too familiar with the pain of taking a creative piece to people, because they create through resistance and showcase to concoctions of yay, nay and who do you think you are. A creative thinks critically. A creative is head strong and intentional in their executions because they are accustomed to creating something from nothing. You want to be unforgettable? You want to make a dent in the universe? Be friends with your creative self. If he/she is sleeping, awaken them. Create.

O papel do RP é ser um gestor da Comunicação. Isso significa entender o todo do processo e do fluxo e não apenas ficar com uma tarefa. Ser criativo é essencial para o profissional de Relações Públicas. Mas não se engane! Criatividade não é apenas um bom texto ou uma arte interessante. Criatividade atravessa tudo. Desde fluxos novos e processos otimizados a relações humanas mais interessantes.

Go outside the box and be creative. Most PR firms have a set method of targeting journalists, writing a pitch and what I call "the spray and pray" technique which is where you mass pitch. I receive a lot of these. Think about SIMPLE but different angles and WHY this story, product or person is appealing and write a couple different pitches aside from the "blanket" pitch. Research journalists and target them personally.

Be human. Its simple as that, really. Not just in communicating an idea but also in listening to others and truely understanding their needs and experiences. Anyone can slog through a days' work in PR following standard practices that everyone uses to share content. But it is always more effective when you can actually connect with the purpose and humanity of your work.

From my experience, standing out in a Public Relations internship requires a blend of creativity and initiative. Creating a new dimension means going beyond traditional methods. It's about thinking creatively and innovatively to tackle challenges and seize opportunities in unique ways. By bringing fresh ideas to the table and exploring unconventional strategies, you can make a significant impact. Whether it's devising innovative PR campaigns or reimagining how to engage audiences, embracing this forward-thinking approach sets you apart.

To truly excel in PR PERIOD, you must stay the most up-to-date as possible with market trends, competition, your audience and their responses to either a PR campaign that’s being implemented now, or better yet, study from the past. How did your audience react to a past PR campaign the company you’re working for ran. Did it go well? What were the responses like? Be sure it correlates to what you’re focusing on and trying to accomplish while you’re there.

Lee, comprende e investiga en tu entorno. La base es la lectura, ya hay muchas herramientas para poder analizar el entorno de la industria donde puedes participar de manera efectiva con datos duros, que estes en una pasantía de PR no significa que no puedas manejar gráficas e investigación, de ahí salen las mejores propuestas cuando defiendes tus ideas con bases. Siempre ve mas allá.

Nútrete de información de la empresa, del sector, asiste a foros, webinars y accede a toda la información del sector que te sea posible. No solo te permitirá conocer mejor el sector, sino que te brindará data para compartir con stakeholders y generar la percepción de ser un especialista en el tema.

Reflexiona, adáptate, autoevaluate, PERO LO MAS IMPORTANTE, pide retroalimentación, evaluación de otros acerca de tu desempeño, tus logros, ello te permitirá buscar la mejora continua, la innovación, y mejor desempeño.

Feedback can sound like an intimidating word, but it’s important to understand that feedback and criticism are not the same thing. Don’t think of it as criticism, think of it as a learning opportunity. Feedback helps us stay on track, improve our performance, and teaches us how to be better. As an intern, you’ll most likely have a performance review after 60 to 90 days. But, don’t wait until the end of your internship to get an evaluation from your supervisor. Seek feedback in realtime to learn what you can work on and improve. This will show your boss that you’re eager to learn and succeed in your role.

En un mundo saturado, a menudo olvidamos el valor crucial de las pausas conscientes. Estas no solo permiten evaluar nuestro desempeño y encontrar áreas de mejora, sino que también nos mantienen conectados con nuestros objetivos y valores. Personalmente, integro estas pausas en mi rutina diaria y promuevo su adopción entre mi equipo y amigos, reconociendo su impacto positivo en la productividad y bienestar. Fomentar un ambiente que valore la reflexión y el aprendizaje continuo fortalece la cohesión y eficacia del equipo.

Adaptabilidad, una soft kill muy valorada. Los cambios últimamente son de 360° en tecnología, en comunicación, en relaciones públicas. Así que debes tener resiliencia, y creatividad para poder transformar el mercado con tu actitud y aptitud.

When you begin, hold back. Be polite, but observe and learn who is who. After a while you’ll know the hierarchy and who might be best to learn from. Try and spot a potential mentor. Never be afraid to ask questions, make the most of your internship and view it as the first step on the ladder of a very interesting career choice.

Out of my experience in the past 20 years working in the world of PR, there are three key success factors for interns starting their careers in PR that I might share: Listen and Observe: Carefully watch how more experienced colleagues manage projects. This hands-on learning is invaluable. Share Unconventional Ideas: Don’t hesitate to share your ideas, even if they seem unconventional. Out-of-the-box thinking fosters innovation. You as a new player in the field may not be affected by operational blindness. Request Feedback: Engage with you supervidsors in a dialogue about your career goals and ask for advice on how to achieve them. Feedback is a two-way street and having open conversation helps to further build your personal growth.

Como pasar de una pasantía a manager: Se educado, respetuoso, persistente, con iniciativa, aprende constantemente, ayuda cuando se necesita, capacítate, y nunca dejes de perseguir tus sueños.

Be a sponge. No one hires an intern because they expect you to know everything already. Absorb as much knowledge and experience as you can. Make sure you are getting constructive feedback that will help you grow. Even if you don’t end up with a full time position with the company, make sure you are gaining something from the experience that you can leverage for your next opportunity.

1) Be a good student, a hard worker and a team player. 2) Excel at the basics: Be respectful, thankful, a good listener, an eager learner, flexible, friendly to all, and on time. Meet – or beat – deadlines. 3) Learn as much about the respective organization as possible before beginning the internship. 4) Be open to sharing new-to-the-market technologies, innovations and skills that you have learned. 5) Network, seek feedback and mentorships. 6) Don’t be timid. Ask questions. Share your ideas, volunteer to help implement (or lead) them and other projects that may help the team. And enjoy the experience!
