To excel as an administrative manager, you must be bold in getting in the weeds with your employees. You have to be a leader, not just a manager. You can't manage a team without them trusting you, and in order to build that trust, you have to be on the ground in the weeds working with them.

Identify core skill sets of your team and empower them through delegation. Understand the effect of policies at the point of care by asking input/evaluation from staff (i.e., are they effective, do they meet the intended goals).

One of my mentors once told me that a good leader cannot lead from behind a desk. It seems so basic, but meeting/rounding daily with those served and key stakeholders and taking action demonstrates the behavior that will develop current and future leaders. It reminds me of my ordination to the permanent diaconate back in 2008. During the Rite of Ordination, at the handing on of the Book of the Gospels, the newly ordained deacon hears these words from the Bishop: “Receive the Gospel of Christ, whose herald you have become. Believe what you read, teach what you believe, and practice what you teach.” It is also very interesting to share that mentoring and coaching others to become better leaders helps the teacher become better as well:).

Have in-depth knowledge in clinical governance. Show interest in staff activities and always try to seek the best out of them. Be an inspirational leader and respect their opinions. Engage them in decision making and allow them to take ownership of the area they work. Support, encourage, correct and motivate them to bring out their best.

Engagement is key. A leader must take time to explain the rationale for decisions and to allow space for questions, discourse and differences of opinions. I recently heard someone wisely state that “taking charge” as a leader should be more about the leader’s relationship with their self, not about having control over others. For example, a leader is taking charge of herself when she controls her impulse to fix things quickly with little input from others and, instead, brings her team together to brainstorm solutions. The old school top-down and “smoke and mirrors” approaches to healthcare leadership are ineffective and only create distrust.

Always trust that when you are doing the best thing for the patient with regard to throughout processes, the staff will eventually fall in line. Helping them understand the “why” and giving them the “how” with enough gray area for autonomy goes a very long way. Leverage high performers prior to a rollout to be your process champions and they can help maintain expectations and manage up their peers in real time. They can also bring you valid feedback to make necessary tweaks that may come from unexpected or unforeseen circumstances. Also, allowing for the autonomy but preventing deviation from expectations is key.

Reviewing policy and processes as an ongoing work flow makes this a part of every day work. In a way like huddles so that all are involved not just management.

During the climax of COVID crisis, I learnt that telehealth was a safe modality of supporting patients especially on established diagnoses, and care. Electronic medical recording, virtual teachings and consultations is found so relevant for us at this era of practice.

All what is done in the healthcare setting should be geared towards the patient's welfare and wellness. We should always have that consciousness so as not to let our administrative responsibilities deter us from the priority, our patients. Like in business where it is said the customer is key, the patient is key in healthcare.

Keep all the decisions patient centric. Make sure to enhance their experience such as efficient appointment scheduling, clear communication about medical procedures, prompt and effective resolution of issues. This will improve outcomes, enhance trust, improves overall healthcare delivery.

I believe if the patient is at the center of everything we do we are on the right path. We all understand that money is tight in healthcare, but if we say patients are our priority we have to make safe staffing a reality, not the first number to cut. All research indicates patients have better outcomes if nurse staffing is great and nurses have time to deliver the holistic care that is the essence of who we are as professionals. When nurses are engaged and happy with their practice, patient care and patient satisfaction continues to improve at every level.

As a healthcare leader, it is also important to stay true to your own core values and beliefs. Don’t ever sacrifice them to conform to who somebody else thinks you should be. Losing oneself can be detrimental as leader and subsequently to those that are being led. Yes, there are various quotas and deadlines to meet. Yes, we provide feedback and are responsible for coaching and mentoring our teams. At times, we may face conflicting priorities and have differences in perspective which creates a space to become complacent and go with the flow despite what we know is best—for ourselves and our teams. We cannot give up and lose sight of who we are during challenging times. Hold true to yourself, and be the strong leader you know are.

Do not be afraid to set, and keep, the bar high for goals. Teams are capable, and striving for/meeting/exceeding goals is a valuable team building experience. As a leader, you must set the bar high and support your teams to strive for improvement in processes for the benefit of patients and the organization.

Unfortunately, the current trend is administrators and managers with absolutely no clinical background or degrees managing clinicians or If they have clinical backgrounds, they somehow do not remember what doing the clinical positions entailed and focus on business metrics.

Be a transformative leader in change management. In the dynamic healthcare environment, change is both frequent and complex. Embrace adaptability, recognize the significance of change, and develop strategic approaches to support it. Your leadership in effectively managing change is essential for the growth and development of the organization.
