The stuntman-turned-director, who will receive the Maverick Award at this year's IndieWire Honors, tells IndieWire about how a fresh approach led to revitalized genre films like his "John Wick" franchise.

"Making these films is so exhausting," franchise producer Basil Iwanyk said. "It destroys Keanu, physically and emotionally."
Debuting September 22, the three-part Peacock event stars Colin Woodell and Mel Gibson.
"He fit what we needed based on his film past," executive producer Albert Hughes said.
The artistry highlighted by the "John Wick" movies could soon be honored on Oscar night.
The "three-part event" premieres on Peacock September 2023.
The "Blonde" Oscar nominee is set to star in "John Wick" spin-off "Ballerina" and is rumored to be making her Marvel debut.
“It’s very flattering for them to come back and, you know, say ‘We want more’ and it’s not just a cash grab," Stahelski said of the enthusiastic response to the fourth film.
"John Wick" titles captured six of the 20 slots at iTunes and Google Play — including presales for the installment now in theaters.
Erica Lee promises that "The Continental" will explore questions such as: "What is the staff like? How do you get into The Continental? How are the gold coins made?"
