Brady Corbet, the director of “The Brutalist,” is still trying to figure out the best way to deliver the print for his film to the Venice Film Festival, where it will debut next month. That’s because the epic 215-minute story of a Holocaust survivor forging a new life in America will be shown in 70mm, which means that all 26 reels of film will need to travel in four Pelican cases from Los Angeles to Italy, weighing in at approximately 300 pounds.
“We may have to buy a couple of plane tickets,” he said, shortly after Venice unveiled its lineup. “We have to figure out the best way to get it through customs in order to hand deliver it in time.”
But Corbet has been resisting the digital tide for years, having shot his two previous films, “Vox Lux” and “The Childhood of a Leader,” on celluloid. That’s become something...

The 2024 New York Film Festival has set Steve McQueen’s Blitz, starring Saoirse Ronan and Elliot Heffernan, as its closing night film.
The movie, set in London during the blitzkrieg by the Germans during World War II, will receive its North American premiere on Oct. 10 at Alice Tully Hall.
McQueen wrote, directed and produced Blitz, which is told from the parallel perspectives of working-class single mother Rita (Ronan) and her 9-year-old son George (Heffernan) as they become separated in the city under siege.
The film also stars Harris Dickinson, Benjamin Clementine, Kathy Burke, Paul Weller, Stephen Graham, Leigh Gill, Mica Ricketts, Cj Beckford, Alex Jennings, Joshua McGuire, Hayley Squires, Erin Kellyman and Sally Messham. In addition to McQueen, who produces through his Lammas Park banner, producers include Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, New Regency’s Arnon and Yariv Milchan and Michael Schaefer as well as Anita Overland and Adam Somner.

Few film festivals are more synonymous with its location than Sundance and the snowy mountains of Park City, Utah. But with the festival’s contract with its longtime host set to expire after the 2026 edition, a new era could be on the horizon.
This spring the Sundance Institute accepted proposals from cities seeking to become the festival’s new home, ultimately narrowing the list down to six finalists: Atlanta, Ga; Boulder, Co; Cincinnati, Oh; Louisville, Ky; Park City/Salt Lake City, Ut; and Santa Fe, New Mexico.
As the clock ticks on the festival’s decision, its search has become one of the most hotly discussed topics in the world of independent film. While it could remain in Park City, Sundance could also move to the similarly mountainous town of Boulder. Cities like Atlanta, Santa Fe, Cincinnati, and Louisville would represent a more significant shift in the festival’s identity.

Thanks to stellar performances in “Challengers” and “La Chimera,” British actor Josh O’Connor is on the cusp of a Hollywood breakout. Empire reports that O’Connor will star opposite Emily Blunt in Steven Spielberg‘s upcoming UFO blockbuster.

Scott Hanson Changed How We Watch Football, So Peacock Hired Him to Change How We Watch the Olympics

It’s one thing for a sports broadcast to do its own whip-around show. The galaxy brain idea Peacock and NBC had when it came to this year’s Olympics coverage was, what if we got The guy known for The whip-around sports show: “NFL RedZone” host Scott Hanson.
That’s just what they did, tapping Hanson to be their primetime host for “Gold Zone,” established during previous Olympic Games as an answer to “RedZone” that gives viewers an uninterrupted, constant stream of Olympics coverage. And now, it’s from the guy everyone knows delivers “7 hours of commercial-free football” every Sunday. Maybe if you’re good, you’ll see an Olympic-themed “Octobox” or even a “Decabox!”
“They immediately know, ‘Gold Zone,’ it’s ‘RedZone’ for the Olympics. There’s an expectation there,” Hanson told IndieWire in an interview over Zoom. “Maybe some new Olympic viewers find ‘Gold Zone’ the way...

The allegations of Francis Ford Coppola kissing extras during the “Megalopolis” production now includes video evidence.
Variety released two videos from the “Megalopolis” set during which a nightclub scene was being filmed. The scene captured was shot on February 14, 2023, as the outlet reported. The call sheet included that actresses playing female partygoers had been “cleared for topless nudity” while other extras out of the 150 to 200 on set were “cleared for [being] scantily clad.”
Two sources told Variety that writer/director Coppola was unprofessional during the scene in question and ruined takes while hugging and kissing actresses in frame.
“I’ve never seen anyone on set, and this extends to a camera operator, so much as touch an actor,” one source said, deeming Coppola’s behavior “uncommon.”
The source claimed that Coppola announced on a microphone, “Sorry, if I come up to you and kiss you. Just know it’s solely for my pleasure.

Marvel’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” (Disney) grossed $38.5 million in Thursday previews. Though not a record (“Avengers: Endgame” took in $60 million), it suggests an opening above the projected $150 million-$200 million. However, it guarantees the easiest of predictions: This will make it the best opening for an R-rated film ever.
“Deadpool and Wolverine” will be the biggest opening weekend for an R-rated film as not only an unadjusted gross, but also adjusted to relative ticket prices. It should also easily score the biggest domestic total for an R-rated release, but it will remain far down the list of R-rated hits based on attendance.
At $371 million, it will become the highest grossing R-rated film. But it will need to gross $464 million — $100 million more than either of the two earlier “Deadpool” films — to even make the top 15 when comparing adjusted ticket prices.

Sir Ian McKellen is now the most feared drama critic on the West End thanks to his turn in “The Critic.”
McKellen leads the adaptation of Anthony Quinn’s 2015 novel “Curtain Call,” which centers on an aging — but iconic — journalist who teams up with an actress (Gemma Arterton) to exact revenge on his newspaper’s new owner (Mark Strong). The film is set in 1934 London.
“The Critic” is written by Academy Award nominee Patrick Marber and is directed by Anand Tucker (“Hilary and Jackie,” “Shopgirl”).
The official synopsis reads: “Jimmy Erskine (McKellen) is the most feared theatre critic of the age. He lives as flamboyantly as he writes and takes pleasure in savagely taking down any actor who fails to meet his standards. When the owner of the Daily Chronicle newspaper dies, and his son David Brooke (Strong) takes over, Jimmy quickly finds himself at odds with his new boss and his position under threat.

If you know anything about Hollywood history, you are probably aware of the many, many incarnations of United Artists studios. Founded in 1919 by Charlie Chaplin, D.W. Griffith, Mary Pickford, and Douglas Fairbanks, it has been a distributor and, since 1981, a division of MGM Studios (then named MGM/UA Studios). Today, Amazon MGM Studios revealed that United Artists will live once more under a new deal with producer Scott Stuber and his yet-to-be-named financing company.

Thank the Midwest for the stunning “Twisters” box office turnout over the past weekend: The movie’s middle-American appeal helped Lee Isaac Chung‘s disaster movie whip up more than $80 million at the opening weekend box office. As of writing, the Glen Powell star vehicle has grossed over $113 million in the United States.
Plus, a “Super Bowl” trailer always goes a long way with heartland audiences who feel underrepresented or devalued by Hollywood. Ditto an NBCUniversal-backed NASCAR spot featuring Powell himself hocking the film, and a production shot on location in Oklahoma, and a movie about the very disasters affecting states in America’s Tornado Alley. Rival studios should take note of how Universal Pictures has tapped into a rural sensibility here with a movie both fresh and also familiar given its expansion of the IP established by Jan de Bont’s 1996 blockbuster, “Twister.”

Glen Powell is now officially a Hollywood leading man, and he has a secondary role to partially thank for that: his memorable turn as Hangman in 2022’s “Top Gun: Maverick.” So when will Hangman return to the skies? The actor is playing mum, but he’ll at least confirm he has “a date” for when “Top Gun 3” starts shooting.

If you’re as terminally online as I am, you see Tony Hale’s face every day.
The actor best known for “Veep” and “Arrested Development” is a household name for comedy fans, even if he enjoys a degree of anonymity in his day-to-day.
“People are just really nice,” he told IndieWire, along with an anecdote of the previous night when a restaurant hostess shared her appreciation of his work. “But then — my wife is from Alabama — I go to Alabama and no one’s watching or has watched ‘Veep’ or ‘Arrested.’ So it’s not that kind of really high fame.”
It’s the kind of fame that prompts people to shout “Buster!” at him in the street, or character-specific things like “You’ve got two hands” — the kind of fame that comes from being on two heavily-memed shows, at least one of which was all over social media...

Scott Stuber wasn’t out of the game for long, and he’s bringing back with him a venerated classic film brand. The former Netflix film chief is teaming with Amazon MGM Studios to relaunch the United Artists label and help produce movies for both theatrical and streaming.
Stuber left Netflix this spring, and under his new production company about to launch, he’ll already have a first-look, multiyear film deal with Amazon MGM Studios and will be involved in anything released by the new United Artists.
“With his proven track record of delivering global hits and an eye towards theatrical fare, Scott’s expertise and vision align perfectly with our film strategy,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios. “We are so proud to welcome him to our lot and partner with him on the relaunch of the legendary UA brand, as we work to leverage existing and new IP into big,...

“I Am Legend” fans already knew a sequel was on the way, with Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan set to star. But there’s a slight problem with that news: spoiler alert (for a movie almost 20 years old), Smith’s character died at the end of Francis Lawrence‘s 2007 film. So how is the actor back for the sequel, especially after his persona non grata status in Hollywood has only recently been revoked?

“The Beast Within” literally refers to the werewolf that Noah (Kit Harrington) shape-shifts into during the dead of night, but director and co-writer Andrew J. Farrell uses his Gothic-lite film to ask insipid questions about inner monstrosity. Does Noah transform into a werewolf or is he really becoming his true self? An ancient ancestral curse may be the reason for his lycanthropic plight, but hasn’t he always been something of a beast anyway? Is the transmogrification really the cause of his family’s domestic hardship or is it just an externalization of Noah’s own brutish behavior?
It’s old hat for werewolves on screen to be deployed as symbols; you can date the practice back to the Lon Chaney-starring monster films Universal Pictures made in the ’30s and ’40s. But “The Beast Within” has nothing much to offer except the domestic violence allegory at its center, so Farrell repeatedly emphasizes,...

Director Jeff Zimbalist did a little of what’s called rooftopping in his teens and 20s, finding ways onto the tops of buildings and bridges and construction cranes that loom above city skylines.
In 2015, the Instagram algorithm served Zimbalist something that combined that early passion for urban exploration with his work as a filmmaker: He became fascinated by the way Russian rooftopper Angela Nikolau would turn feats of high-stakes trespassing into artistic imagery and short-form videos that felt much more like performance art.
However, the documentary he set out to make about her and her rival/colleague Ivan Berkus, changed shape over the seven years of making it and required a specialized process to create imagery as immersive as the experience of rooftopping itself. As the name “Skywalkers: A Love Story” implies, the film co-directed by Zimbalist and Maria Bukhonina became about Berkus’ and Nikolau’s romantic relationship. Intimacy, it argues persuasively,...

Who would have thought that David Lynch would inspire a video game adaptation portrayal?
Jack Black cited the auteur as a reference for his take on bringing his “Borderlands” character, android Claptrap, to life. Black voices the droid, and channeled his best Lynch impression while in the recording booth.
“It’s kind of a weird reference, but David Lynch. It’s a little old Americana, but he’s also got a twisted, surreal look on the world,” Black told Entertainment Weekly about his take on the tone for Claptrap.
Black added that the “Borderlands” GearBox video game fully embodies his “favorite genre” to play.
“It captured the energy of my favorite genre, which is post-apocalyptic action-adventure,” Black said. “‘Road Warrior’ comes to mind.”
“Borderlands” director Eli Roth compared his film adaptation to cult classics “Escape from New York” and “The Fifth Element.”

[Editor’s Note: this list was originally published in March 2018. It has since been updated with new entries.]
It’s easy to think of the kind of stories that get told in the comic book world as just one genre or tone, but as seen below, graphic novels, comic strips, and other sequential art have offered up an incredible range of storytelling. And these stories have been inspiring great TV shows for years, even before superhero stories dominated the box office.
There were plenty of options that nearly made the list, like the WB’s “Smallville,” which squandered its early potential after running just a few seasons too long. Because one of the most exciting things about these stories is that there’s a rich variety to choose from.
With editorial contributions from Liz Shannon Miller, Ben Travers, and Hanh Nguyen.

It’s difficult to think of a modern A-list actor more strongly associated with one role than Hugh Jackman. In 2000, the Australian performer was known almost exclusively in the theater world, after playing the role of Curly in a West End production of “Oklahoma!” Then, that July, he played the grizzled, bitter Wolverine, the point-of-view character in superhero blockbuster “X-Men.”
Jackman wasn’t an obvious choice for the role — his only film credits beforehand were two minor Australian productions, and his 6 foot 2 stature and conventionally hunky appearance isn’t exactly a spitting image of the short hairball that James “Logan” Howett is typically portrayed as in the comics. And yet, when he appeared on screen in the first film as a gruff outsider, Jackman instantly embodied the qualities that made Wolverine such a consistent fan-favorite: his anger at the world, his regret of his past, and his tender heart beneath...

It’s a foul that the Warner Bros. Discovery corporation is taking quite personally.

Modern television has provided ample evidence that time does not dictate genre. The Emmys learned this the hard way, when they tried to bypass the comedy or drama debates by using runtimes to decide category placement, only to be swarmed by even more controversy during their confounding, seemingly arbitrary appeals process. Yes, it turns out half-hour shows can be dramas and hourlong shows can skew comedic. Look no further than some of TV’s buzziest, best shows: “The White Lotus”, “Succession”, and “The Bear” (let’s not start that up again).
But while time may not determine what a series is labeled, it does often weigh heavily on a series’ success. More important than shoving a show into one box or another is recognizing that many of these shows are successful because they blur the lines. “The Bear” serves up intense kitchen scenarios that can skew toward sitcom set-ups, yet...

Paramount/Hasbro Entertainment dropped the second trailer for “Transformers One” July 25, following its San Diego Comic-Con premiere. The first animated feature reboot from director Josh Cooley (“Toy Story 4”) explores the untold origin story of Autobots on planet Cybertron before Michael Bay’s post-apocalyptic live-action franchise. We learn about the early friendship between Orion Pax (Chris Hemsworth) and D-16 (Brian Tyree Henry) prior to becoming bitter enemies as the legendary Optimus Prime and infamous Megatron.
Orion and D-16 are hard-working, frustrated miners, who drill underground for Energon (the source of energy storage and power generation) during a sustained drought. However, they dream of joining the elite team of Autobots led by Sentinel Prime (Jon Hamm). What Cooley brings to the franchise through animation is greater emotion, humor, and stylization, thanks to the talented team at Ilm (led by VFX supervisor Frazer Churchill and animation supervisor Rob Coleman) and an appealing voice cast,...

How did friends become bitter enemies? The surprising story of Optimus Prime and Megatron is revealed in “Transformers One.” This animated prequel shows the iconic characters working together to save Cybertron. Using the fictional planet as its setting has some fans recalling the ‘80s classic “The Transformers: The Movie,” but producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura sees a stark difference between them. “They’re so not comparable because that’s so dark, and this has so much humanity,” Bonaventura told Variety.

The actress said during Spectrum News NY1 podcast “You Decide with Errol Louis” that TV has suffered post-strikes. Both of the SAG-AFTRA and WGA unions went on strike in 2023. According to the star, the landscape has instead prioritized “safe” series as opposed to “prestige TV” like “Succession”-type shows.
“It seems to be a step back, a little retrograde and like doing only the, you know, considered the safest material,” Smith-Cameron said. “Although I think, I feel like that model has changed because now when I think of the great successful shows, I think of ‘Sopranos,’ ‘Mad Men,’ and ‘Succession.’ These were considered prestige TV, and I just hope that they’ll come back around to it.”
She continued, “I think they’re just playing it safe. I feel like they are. I don’t know.

Francis Lawrence had already cast his younger leads for his upcoming Stephen King adaptation, “The Long Walk,” but now he’s added a couple of veteran actors to his ensemble. Deadline reports that Judy Greer and Mark Hamill are the latest to join the dystopian thriller, about an annual event in which 100 teenage boys walk nonstop to their deaths until one remains standing.

Lady Gaga is debuting a new stage persona, complete with different vocal chops, for her take on Harley “Lee” Quinn.
The Grammy and Oscar winner told Empire magazine that her portrayal of the iconic character that originated in the “Batman the Animated Series” show will reveal a new side of herself. Quinn is canonically a psychiatrist who treats Arthur Fleck Aka the Joker (Joaquin Phoenix) in Arkham Asylum.
“People know me by my stage name, Lady Gaga, right? That’s me as that performer, but that is not what this movie is; I’m playing a character,” Gaga said. “So I worked a lot on the way that I sang to come from Lee, and to not come from me as a performer.”
Part of that was shedding her professionally trained voice and instead tapping into a less refined side.

An individual working at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Ga died by suicide on Wednesday morning, local authorities confirmed to IndieWire, and an insider source additionally confirmed that the individual was a woman working as a Teamster on DC Studios’ “Superman.”
Captain Austin Dunn with the Fayetteville Police Department told IndieWire officers responded to a report of an unconscious adult contractor located inside a vehicle on the Trilith Studios property on Wednesday, July 24 around 6:47 a.m. Capt. Dunn said there is no suspicion of foul play but added there are no investigations ongoing currently.
“Arriving officers and medical personnel found the patient deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Evidence collected revealed no suspicion of foul play, nor is the investigation connected to any ongoing studio projects,” Dunn said in a statement. “Additional details are unavailable at this time as the investigation is in its infancy. Live concert experiences of the music for films, TV shows, and video games, with full orchestras, are nothing new. Screenings with a full onstage orchestra celebrate watershed scores, create communal experiences of beloved musical themes, and get people to see live music — to say nothing of a hellacious way to end “Tár.”
It’s not surprising that a juggernaut film like “Barbie” would eventually have a North American amphitheater tour of film screenings with a live orchestra. But IndieWire is happy to report that “Barbie’s” concert era has come together in the most “Barbie” way possible. Folks looking to see the film with a live instrumental performance of Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt’s score — and their songs — will be treated to the Barbieland Sinfonietta, an all-female orchestra conducted by Macy Schmidt.

After directing the likes of “The Wolverine, “Logan,” and “Indiana Jones And The Dial of Destiny,” James Mangold has to set something straight: he’s not a fan “multi-movie universe-building.” In fact, he declares such a thing as the “death” and “enemy of storytelling.” Easy for someone to say that kind of IP launched their career, but here we are, in Hollywood’s dismal age of multiversal redundancy.

A ’60s-set psychodrama about a pair of suburban housewives whose friendship goes haywire — and then some — after one of their children dies in a freak accident, the misconceived but morbidly entertaining “Mothers’ Instinct” is far too slapdash to respect the seriousness of its premise, but at the same time also far too serious to indulge in the campiness of its plot. The result is a movie that’s a little fucked up, a little fun, and mostly just very, very sad in a way that it doesn’t have the heart to explore.
Alice is the fragile one, at least at first. A crumbling eggshell of a woman who’s just been glued back together by the most discrete male psychiatrists in all of Mayberry, she can hardly make breakfast for her seven- or eight-year-old son Theo (Eamon O’Connell) without threatening to flake apart from the pressure to keep up appearances.

The Skeleton Dance.George Eastman Museum senior curator Peter Bagrov was buying time for a projector to be repaired before the Nitrate Picture Show’s opening-night screening of Intolerance (1916). He told the audience that a fellow archivist had once compared the event, held annually at the Museum’s Dryden Theatre, to a feast where the bourgeoisie dine on otherwise extinct animals. That archivist isn’t the festival’s only critic: I have heard others liken the wide-eyed worship of cinema’s mostly defunct physical materials to a necrophilia of sorts. After all, if nitrate prints are the last vestiges of an otherwise forgotten industry standard, the best indicator of what a film was supposed to look like, does their projection to enthused cinephiles over a long weekend in Rochester, New York, not constitute the defilement of some of film history’s most precious materials? Even if the prints do not go up in flames,...

“The Boys” Season 4 is off to a super start.
Through its first 39 days of availability, the fourth season of “The Boys” has drawn 55-plus million viewers worldwide, Amazon said, which is 20 percent better than Season 3’s start (over the same 39-day period). It is the fourth-best season of television ever on Amazon Prime Video, behind just (in order) “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 1, “Fallout” Season 1, and “Reacher” Season 2.
Amazon says that 60 percent of “The Boys” Season 4 audience was based outside of the U.S. Particularly strong performances came from the UK, Brazil, India, Germany, Canada, France, Mexico, Spain, and Italy. All told, “The Boys” Season 4 reached number 1 on Prime Video in more than 170 countries.
“The Boys” made headlines last week when its Season 4 finale was updated to include a warning of “fictional political violence.”

Between “Terri” (2011), “The Lovers” (2017), “and “French Exit” (2020), not to mention the series “Doll & Em,” filmmaker Azazel Jacobs has continuously delivered compelling human dramas. Natasha Lyonne, Carrie Coon, and Elizabeth Olsen are coming home to their respective indie roots for grieving family drama “His Three Daughters.” The trio play the eponymous siblings for the Netflix film, which debuted at TIFF 2023. Coon stars as responsible sister Katie, who is tasked with carrying out her ailing father’s (Jay O. Sanders) end-of-life wishes. Olsen is her sister Christina who embraces the spiritual realm to cope with losing her dad, while Lyonne’s Rachel opts to smoke pot and disassociate.
The three estranged sisters come together once more to a New York apartment to care for their dying father and “try to mend their own broken relationship with one another,” per the film’s official synopsis.
Azazel Jacobs writes and directs the film, which IndieWire’s Kate Erbland gave a B+ review. Jacobs’ previous features include “French Exit” and “The Lovers,” as well as the series “Sorry for Your Loss...
