Hello all!


This is The AB Icon Thread. Here, we talk about, make, and ask for Anime Icons!!


So far conversations about icons have been on the ct and in a few other threads over the course of the year. At times the conversations within the ct have annoyed other users and i think it's a good idea to have a dedicated thread to provide a permanent home to these conversations. Besides, now all this good talk won't be lost pages behind in the ct or pages back in threads that have died. It'll be here, where everyone can see it!

To get the first question out of the way, What is an Icon?

This is an Icon.
It's a 140x140 picture that goes under each and every user's name!! (or above their name depending on what Theme you use to view the boards.)






What can I do in this thread?

  • Users are free to showcase icons that they've made(kind of like the Anime Babes Thread is for sharing favorite pics).
  • Users are free to make requests. (want an icon made for you? we can help!!)
  • Users can talk about icons! (what they've made, how they made them, source pics, anything Icon related!!)
Before we get ahead of ourselves, This thread needs to have some rules and guidelines to abide by so that it doesn't go out of control and turn into a mess. It won't be difficult to follow these rules, but i should remind everyone that if they do not follow the rules, they are subject to LiT's very capable warnings and very stickly bannings. So please follow the rules and everyone will have a great time here!!

  • Do not post anything that will violate IGN's Terms of Service. Icons are viewed publicly so please keep everything safe for work.
If you think that maybe the icon you made or the picture you want as an icon is in any way QUESTIONABLE(that means nudity, curse words, sexual content, anything that makes you think....mmm...i might make someone uncomfortable or mad), feel free to contact a moderator and simply ask! Mods like [URL='http://www.ign.com/boards/members/lost_in_translation.41/']@Lost_In_Translation[/URL]and I are happier when we are helping instead of banning!!

So now that we know what can be done in this thread, it's time to figure out what a good icon is like!

- IGN's Icon space is 140x140 pixels. whatever you make must be re-sized down to 140x140 for IGN to accept uploading the image you want to use as an icon.

- Icons can be made and used on IGN as JPEG, GIF or PNG images. My recommendation is PNG followed by GIF. Jpeg images tend to have problems while being uploaded to IGN.

- IGN has a file size limit of 100kb for any icon you make. But there are ways around that by hosting off site, scroll down to see what i mean.

Now there are good icons, and bad icons. We like to see good icons. So what's the difference??

Good Icons:

The standard is to have an icon with a transparent background with one cutoff at the very bottom.

Example:

(Protip: if you change theme's, you'll notice the background around the icon will change too, this way the icon looks good no matter what theme people use)

But that's not the only style we can do. You want that image's background? So do we! Boxy Icons can look just as good

What's a BAD Icon?

Examples:

choppy/pixelated = bad.

cut offs on more than 1 side(this one has 3 sides cut off) of the icon = bad.

steering clear of these common beginner mistakes will make sure we see good icons all the time.

Now i need to stress that every user has, from a slightly different, to a drastically different way of making an icon. Please RESPECT user creativity and style. If you wish to discuss styles and steps, do so with respect for the other user. Stay Classy!!


Uploading Gif Icons

This is a relatively new one for ign. animated gif icons look like this:

now if the file size is under 100kb, upload it like you normally would with IGN's icon uploader. IF THE FILE SIZE IS OVER 100kb, use the following tutorial and you will be able to enjoy your icon without worrying about file size.

Step 2: Find a gif 140x140 or smaller and 100kb or smaller. Name it, gif1.gif. It doesn't matter what since you will be replacing it anyway. Make sure you create two folders since the .gif files will have the exact same name at the end of this.

Step 3: Upload your gif to majhost into a folder you've created. If all goes well, you should have something like this right now.

Boom, so far so good. Now onto the next step.

Step 5: Make a new high quality/file size .gif or find one. You can use ezgif.com or Photoshop. I have tested this with larger dimensions and it works so you don't have to use any tools if you do not want to. There are no restrictions. Considering the small size of the window on MyIGN, however, your new avatar may be too small to see. I recommend 140x140 or dimensions that are exactly square.

Step 6. Rename the .gif the same name your old gif. I recommended gif1.gif, but any name will do as long as it's exactly the same.

Step 7. Upload that .gif to majhost, in the same folder and it will replace your old .gif.

If you check below, it will certainly look far better than the ,gif above too. The only caveat is that sometimes majhost is down. So I recommend having a backup .gif or avatar just in case this happens. It rarely goes down however, and has only happened to me once in the course of 10 days. Sometimes it will go down for an extended period, but it's not very often.

Took me forever to get used to it though, I really need to go check out the guide for redrawing/recolouring/background graphics on the Icon Board too they could be useful.

i know you had on the Rei one for a little while awhile back. and I have seen someone wearing all but the Holo one before. So it was likely you. I have seen all of those before but Holo so you likely have used them all but that one.

The Lily one (blonde hair) I know hasn't been used, I sent it to Max before because he had a bad version of it at the time but he didn't use it.

I'm never satisfied. I wouldn't say I'm a perfectionist but things bug me whenever I see it, I find a way to nit pick and then I can't be stopped.

Something came up and I'm not going to have any time to do anything this weekend. But I've been watching through some tutorials on YouTube on how to make icons using Photoshop. I'll be watching some more of these tutorials and buy Photoshop sometime next week. I'll most likely make my first icon next weekend but don't expect much. I'm probably not going to make excellent icons right away like some of you can do...

I do, however, plan on making icons of anime antagonists because they don't seem to be very common around here. One of the reasons why I want to get into making icons is because I want to make my own, based on my preferences...

In honor of Eva 3.0 releasing today, let's make dj a new Asuka icon!

Not really sure where the good cutoff is. If you go through the "shorts" it might look strange with just a red block at the bottom. Definitely need her midriff, though. Should be fairly easy even if the picture isn't HD. Danny, Mini, Woody? Gotta represent my queen! [face_love]

EDIT: But if you insist, there's a standing pic of Asuka in her plug suit, wearing a maroon track jacket and a black hat. I'm not saying, I'm just saying. ;)

The only pic I have is not iconable, and is part of a scan, but I'll post it anyway. I'll just cut out the extra so it isn't really a scan.
