TE won't go in motion

Hey guys, first post here. I'm "new" to madden as in I haven't played in 7 or 8 years and I'm having a few issues. One of them is my TE/WR won't go in motion. I select the player and press the L then the R stick in the direction I want him to go and he doesn't move. Are there certain scenarios where the TE can't go in motion? Or something else that may be causing this? Your help is appreciated.
