Evaluation:
Anthony hails from Coral Gables High School in Miami-Dade County, FL. Initially a star running back for the Cavaliers, Anthony left the gridiron after his sophomore campaign to focus on basketball, which his father, Joseph Anthony, played at CGHS from 1993-1995. Ran for 3,006 yards and 17 touchdowns over the course of two years with the Cavaliers football squad.
Anthony is a much more polished player on the court than gridiron, though. Starting since age 14 for coach Devin Donaldson's squad, Anthony has increased his scoring and steal per game average each season. Anthony credits Donaldson for teaching him how to use his natural quickness and agility to set up plays and score in transition.
A classic tweener guard, Anthony doesn't have a defined position due to Donaldson employing him as both a point and a two-guard. Not handling the ball every trip down the floor has stifled Anthony's development in the playmaker category, as he averaged only 2 assists a game his junior season. While he bumped that figure up to 4.4 per game this season, he still looked uncomfortable at times handling the rock.
Teams know what they will get when Anthony signs with their program -- hustle, hard work, and a determination to get better every day. His scoring is predicated on driving to the basket for a layup or dunk; teams will figure this out early on in his college career, which will force him to evolve. Lacks the lateral quickness and explosiveness to be considered a Derrick Rose/Russell Westbrook point guard -- will not be rattling many rims in traffic at the next level.
Anthony led his team to an overall record of 99-21 in the regular season. His team went to the State Tournament his Sophomore-Senior years, being bounced in the second round in three consecutive years. Anthony was regularly overshadowed by point guards, who exploited his lack of knowledge of running the point while the ball was in his hands. As he developed, these problems went away; however, he still looks uncomfortable in situations handling the ball in crunch time.
Staying injury free for most of his career, Anthony missed only 5 games over the course of four years. Four came in his sophomore year due to complications from an illness, and one came this year due to flu. The kid will hit the weight room relentlessly and not miss many games for whoever picks him up -- a rarity in the game these days.
The teams interested in this player are an eclectic mix; Ohio State, who is looking for help at the point guard position after losing Aaron Craft to the NBA Draft are very interested in Anthony and have offered a scholarship. Ole Miss and Notre Dame, who round out the top three, have offered Anthony a scholarship. Ole Miss guarantees a starting slot next season, while Mike Brey and the Fighting Irish have told Anthony he may redshirt next season. North Carolina and Florida State have not offered, but are keen on Anthony and will be interesting to watch as Signing Day approaches.
