Celebrating 1 year of Unpacking & over 1 million copies sold!

November 2 2022

One year ago today, Witch Beam released Unpacking—a relaxing puzzle game about moving into new homes, and uncovering a woman’s story simply through the process of pulling her possessions from cardboard boxes and finding a place for them.

In the 365 days since moving day, Unpacking has garnered 50 award nominations, added more than a few Game of the Year wins to its trophy shelf, and sold over 1 million copies around the world—a pretty cool birthday present from the community for the team at Witch Beam.

Looking back & moving forward

While the life of Unpacking’s unseen protagonist was drawn from the personal experiences of creative director Wren Brier and technical director Tim Dawson (and those of their friends), players around the world found something of themselves in the cardboard boxes, too: a familiar-looking poster for a favorite band, or a game console summoning back memories of a certain awesome summer. A stuffed toy from childhood placed on the same side of the bed as their own favorite plushie, or uncanny reminders of a relationship gone south, north, or a little bit sideways.

“I think the most surprising thing about Unpacking‘s reception is how universal its appeal has been,” says Tim. “We suspected that by telling the story of a specific character we might be limiting our audience, but so many people have found a deep connection with it, which I think speaks to the power of authenticity.”

Attending conventions and connecting with players online, Wren and Tim have had a chance to hear from people around the world about the unexpected ways Unpacking resonated with them and their families and friends. “One story I’ve heard a few times now is parents saying their kids played Unpacking then wanted to tidy up their rooms in real life,” says Tim. “It sounds a bit too good to be true, and not an outcome we’d ever promise, but it’s delightful anyway!”

Let’s unpack some other fun and fascinating factoids to celebrate the game’s one-year anniversary.

Unpacking is about reflecting on your past, recognizing how it helped shape you into who you are today—and maybe even encouraging you to take it easy on yourself in the middle of challenging times. “If I could offer one piece of advice to myself mid development,” says Tim, “It’d probably be ‘Keep at it! Do your best! A lot of people are going to enjoy what you’re making!’”

Congratulations to Witch Beam on one year of Unpacking, and thanks to everyone who’s played. We can’t wait to see what’s next.
