14 Sustainable Home Brands You Can Feel Good About Adding to Cart

Being green is easy when you know where to shop.

By The Editors of House Beautiful

Shop & Tell is our latest shopping series, featuring thoughtfully curated home finds from House Beautiful editors. Every week we'll take you inside our carts and dish on what we're buying—and why you should be reaching for your wallet too.

Mindless shopping can be fun, but it can also leave you feeling unsatisfied. (Did we really need another cup from HomeGoods? Probably not.) Instead, purchasing goods with intent, whether it's because you're supporting a local business or you love the brand's mission, feels ten times more fulfilling. This month at House Beautiful, all of our editors have Earth Month, and Earth Day on April 22, on their minds as they shop. We strive to be environmentally-conscious year-round, but this month the intent to be eco-friendly with our home products is top priority.

It can be as simple as swapping out your plastic and paper grocery bags for reusable ones. SEO Editor Kate McGregor loves the ones from BAGGU: "I never leave the house without one (or three) BAGGU shopping bags—there's even a miniature one clipped to my key ring). The brand crafts its bags with recycled nylon, focusing on low-waste sewing patterns to limit fabric offcuts," she says. For the decorators, go for these pillowcases from Rentrayage, loved by Deputy Managing Editor Olivia Hosken, or refresh your little one's rooms with products from sustainable brands like Oeuf and ecoBirdy. Consider the list below as your starting point to shop more green this year!

Happy Habitat by Karrie Dean Throw Blankets

Throw Blankets
$185 at happyhabitat.com

"All of Happy Habitat's throw blankets are made with 75 percent upcycled cotton. Recycled cotton, created from pre-consumer fibers and clippings that would usually be discarded, requires no new dyeing. As a result, this saves water and adds no new pollutants as well as no land use, intensive water irrigation, and no new fertilizers or pesticides. The throw blankets are so soft and vibrant. They're an easy addition to your space that checks all the boxes: looks good, feels good, does good!"

Green Row Elian Wood Petite Side Table

Elian Wood Petite Side Table

"GreenRow, the new sustainably minded brand from Williams Sonoma Inc partners with 'innovative makers and reputable third-party certifications to move materials and production toward more sustainable methods.' With that in mind when I’m looking for something unique, and an item I can rest assured is created with the best practices, I look here first. As a lover of all things colorful, practical and pretty, this new Elian Petite Table caught my eye. I appreciate the spindle-like accent under the tabletop and the saturated green color. A piece like this can brighten up any room in the house. Even better, for every purchase a tree is planted by the Arbor Day Foundation. Beautiful in my house and great for the planet."

Polywood Curveback Adirondack Chair

Curveback Adirondack Chair

"I had the pleasure of touring the Polywood headquarters and facilities in Syracuse, Indiana, a few years ago, so I’ve seen how the company turns milk jugs and other recycled plastics into durable, all-weather furniture. With a zero-waste mindset, Polywood produces forever furniture that’s low maintenance, available in a variety of colors, and nice to look at. Since I don’t have an outdoor space, I set my parents up with this set in mahogany. My dad, who ran a fastener business, was very impressed. He wishes we got them a long time ago!"

Sabai The Essential Sofa

The Essential Sofa

"I bought The Essential sofa when I moved into my current apartment because it was chic, within my budget, and easy to assemble. It's just a bonus that it's highly sustainable. Not only is the upholstery made of recycled leather, but the legs are composed of SFI-certified wood, so it's as eco-conscious as possible. Even the pillows and cushions are filled with 100 percent recycled fiber. What's more: The brand is doing its part to eliminate fast design with its Closed Loop program, which basically encourages you replace or repair any parts that are no longer in brand-new condition as opposed of simply tossing the sofa and buying a new one."

oeuf Oeuf Toy Store

Oeuf Toy Store

"This toy storage unit is high on my shopping list—I want to get it to match my daughter's crib. I splurged on Oeuf for her nursery because it has such high eco standards and babies spend so much time sleeping. All of its products are GreenGuard Gold certified and made to European standards with nontoxic, water-based finishes. The packaging is made of recycled cardboard, and you can even recycle the furniture itself when it's no longer usable through an Oeuf program."

Coyuchi Climate Beneficial Cotton Soft Washed Sheet Set

Climate Beneficial Cotton Soft Washed Sheet Set

"I tested these relaxed sheets for the first time months ago, and they remain a go-to bedding pick for me. They are suitable for all seasons and only get softer after washing. I just love how the thin striped pattern looks on my bed, draping nicely too. Everything about the sheet set is organic, from the 100 percent Climate Beneficial cotton to the plant-based softener and the fabric bag it’s packaged in. The brand is a founding member of the California Cotton and Climate Coalition, and it uses regenerative farming practices that prevent harmful cotton over-farming."

Fireclay Glazed Thin Brick Tile

Glazed Thin Brick Tile

"Fireclay in a certified B Corp, climate neutral, and made in a solar factory. I used the Fireclay glazed thin brick tile in our bathroom renovation and loved the results. They have an amazing matte, non-reflective glaze and low crackled quality that makes every tile slightly unique. Also, one percent of all brick sales are donated to the National Parks Conservation Association."

ecoBirdy Sunrise Set

Sunrise Set

"If I could buy everything on GOODEE, I would. The retailer keeps a tight edit of home goods while offering brand discovery to its customers. This is how I discovered the ecoBirdy table and chair set, which initially I clicked into because I thought it was for adults. I should have guessed by the size it's for children. (Though the brand does make adult chairs in a different style!) All of ecoBirdy's pieces are made from the brand's trademark recyclable plastic material ecothylene. The design, recycling, and production of ecoBirdy furniture are done in Europe with the highest social and environmental responsibility in mind; it's been acknowledged by B Corp since 2019. Since I don't have kids, I want to buy this cute set for someone—any takers??"

Rentrayage Auntie Oti Kantha Pillow Cases

Auntie Oti Kantha Pillow Cases

"Rentrayage is a one-stop-shop for the coolest everything (I also have my eyes on their elastic waist denim), and incorporates old clothes, vintage fabrics, and deadstock into its creations. I love that these pillows come in a set (who just buys a single, lonely throw pillow?) and support artisans in India. They’ll give your room that perfectly imperfect look."

Parachute Heirloom TENCEL™ Linen Duvet Cover

Heirloom TENCEL™ Linen Duvet Cover
Credit: Jessica Schramm

"I am guilty of previously using cost as my main decision-making factor, and, unfortunately, the money saved is often at the expense of the environment. Now that I'm on the hunt for a new duvet cover, I'm determined to invest in bedding I can feel good about. That's why Parachute's sustainable Heirloom TENCEL™ linen collection caught my eye. It touts the same look and feel as the brand's original linen, but the TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers are biodegradable and compostable and the production process has a lower environmental impact. I've yet to experience the new line for myself so I can't yet say how the fabric compares, but it's definitely high on my list."

Block Shop Thistle Napkin

Thistle Napkin

"Block printed by hand and dyed in small batches, I'm always excited to bust out Block Shop's happy-go-lucky table linens for spring entertaining. The soft color and sweet cornflower details have made this particular pair my new everyday set. All the linens are printed with non-toxic pigments, plus, five percent of Block Shop's profits are invested back into the communities where the work is created through partnerships with local educational and healthcare-related NGOs."

—Claire Brito, Senior Social Editor

BAGGU Standard Set of 3

Standard Set of 3

"With NYC's plastic bag ban, I never leave the house without one (or three) BAGGU shopping bags—there's even a miniature one clipped to my key ring). The brand crafts their bags with recycled nylon focusing on low-waste sewing patterns to limit fabric offcuts, and they audit their factory yearly to practice as sustainably as possible. Plus, with seasonal pattern drops and designer collabs (hello, Sandy Liang), you're always sure to have a eco-friendly bag for every grocery item. Ask anyone who knows me, their Medium Crescent never leaves my shoulder."

ALMOONI Mini Natural Loofah Sponge

Mini Natural Loofah Sponge

"If you're not on the natural loofah game yet, what are you doing? After learning how disgusting plastic loofahs are and realizing that they are extremely wasteful, I wanted to get one made from the actual luffa (or loofah) plant. I found this one from Almooni on Amazon for such a great price and bought it the same day. It does a great job exfoliating my skin and lathers really well."

Hazel Park The Signature Wool Blanket

The Signature Wool Blanket

"I have a basket dedicated to throws and blankets, which I keep by the couch. As someone who gets cold easily, even in the summertime, I'm always looking for ways to cover myself! I don't have an ultra luxe throws, which is why I'm eyeing the ones from new luxury home decor brand Hazel Park. The label offers products, like this cozy wool blanket, made directly in the U.S. This blanket was wool spun and woven in Connecticut (the brand sources wool from Colorado and Wyoming), then finished in New Hampshire. In keeping with its eco-friendly practices, the brand also uses recycled content in its packaging to reduce deforestation."
