Superfans: The Easy Way to Stand Out, Grow Your Tribe, And Build a Successful Business

Rate this book
The magical moments that turn your followers into fans.

Customers, followers, subscribers.

It's easy to just look at the numbers. How many likes? How many purchases? How many email subscribers?

But as entrepreneurs, we have to remember that there are people behind all that data. People who are looking to us to be a leader, to give advice, and to care. They are looking for trustworthy tools and resources, and for someone to help them to achieve their goals. In this dog-eat-dog world, these are the people who are looking for someone who they can trust, and who they know have their best interests in mind.

These are the people, if you connect with them in the right way, who will become Superfans.

Followers may "like" an Instagram post. Customers may buy a product. But "Superfans" will be your biggest supporters. They will promote you and your products because they know you have made a difference in their lives. They will tell their friends. They will send you encouraging emails. They will connect with you and your other fans.

Whether you're a shy YouTuber just starting out, or the leader of a Fortune 500 company, your superfans are out there waiting for you to connect with them. You just need to create that journey, to pave the yellow-brick road that will guide them surely and steadily to superfandom.

You don't need to change the entire world to build a successful business; you just need to change someone's world.

People don't become superfans the moment they find you. They become superfans because of the magical moments you create for them over time.

This book will help you do just that.

I’m Pat Flynn, a regular thirty-three-year-old guy from San Diego, California who makes a living on the Internet. I haven’t won the lottery, and I don’t drive a fancy car. What I do have is a beautiful wife, two amazing children, a loving family, awesome friends, and a line of work that allows me to spend most of my time with them. I consider myself the luckiest person on earth. Here’s why.

I lost my beloved job as an architect in 2008 when the U.S. economy crumbled. Scared and confused, I turned to the Internet for a possible new career path. Why the Internet? Because before being let go, I had started a blog about the LEED exam, a new and acclaimed certification within the industry encouraging sustainable, environmentally friendly architecture designs. The blog’s purpose was to organize my study notes. Apparently other architects were passionate about the LEED certification too because, unknowingly at first, my blog became quite popular. Presto! My first online business was born.

In the months and years that followed, I learned all about being an online entrepreneur and making money online. I started the Smart Passive Income blog and podcast as a way to help teach and inspire others who crave the same freedoms I have come to enjoy. Those platforms have enabled me to meet amazing people and do the work I love—helping other passionate entrepreneurs build and grow successful online businesses. My success still boggles my mind; I still can’t believe all that’s happened since being let go. It turns out that getting laid off was the best thing that ever happened to me.

Today, I have the amazing honor and pleasure to reach hundreds of thousands of people each month via my blog and podcasts. I take this responsibility as seriously as I do my family commitments because I believe people need authentic examples in their lives to help them find their way. That’s my purpose—to be the crash test dummy of online business and share what I learn, both the good and the bad. That’s how we learn, grow, and prosper...together.

This is a book for people building online communities around a business, product, service, or IP. It’s got good advice that very few are following just yet.

The thing I don’t love is that it doesn’t start from a deeper, first-principles perspective. Advice is plentiful, but it feels like the reader is being given fish rather than being taught how to fish. Why do these behaviors work? How can you discover new ways to cultivate superfans? What’s really going on in the mind of any rabid follower and how do movements start?

I really dislike it when books waste my time with anecdotes. This is one of those books. I know a lot of people like them, but that's because they've been trained to. Because it feels better to say "I've read this 250-page book about building an audience." than "I've read this 1,500-word blogpost."

Pat Flynn is a nice guy, and he does offer genuinely good advice in the book. The only reason I read it, is because I like him. But the content of the book can be skipped without much being lost, if you only focus on the action steps at the end of each chapter.

Still, some explanations were good, but I feel very strongly about anecdotes. I get that some people get motivated from them or whatever, but seriously, the whole industry needs to dial it down a little.

I read the ebook version of Superfans by podcaster and passive income guru Pat Flynn. The content format was structured well and so it was an easy read. I am a regular listener to his SPI podcast so there were a few 'new' gems to be found in here. However, it could have been more self-contained.

What I mean is that Pat Flynn adds a large number of calls-to-action to go to his course website for the book readers. With so many repetitive links in content encouraging me to head there in order to get the full benefit of the material, I couldn't help but be fully aware that I was reading a book-length lead magnet.

As an avid reader of books, and with so many other distractions to deal with, it's not particularly desirable for me to click away from a reader app, close a physical book, or stop an audiobook to focus on consuming anything else besides the content of the book. This one felt incomplete as a standalone title.

I have mixed feelings on this book. Obviously, Pat Flynn knows his stuff and shares it very well. But I resist the entire concept of superfans because if we all did this the world would be a bunch of followers. I wish the content creators out there would put more thought into making their stuff more meaningful and nut just shiny and exciting. That said, if you want to be noticed in the blogosphere, you have to use the principles in this book.

I resisted reading this book for a bit thinking that it felt a little egotistical to “want Superfans”. But after reading the synopsis and a few reviews I realized it was more about serving and building your community and man, does it hit the mail on the head. Pat comes across as extremely approachable himself and gives so many examples in this book on how to put yourself into your brand and help bring your community together. I have always been a big part of my brand but I haven’t been great at knowing how to involve my community more. This gave me so many ideas for ways I can “pass them the ball” and connect more. I’m so excited to implement the suggestions in this book in my own way that will resonate with my core group. Highly recommend this book if you’re looking to do the same.

Listened to an audiobook narrated by Pat himself – great performance and the book itself definitely delivers. Plus Pat is certainly the best person to write about the subject of Superfans, given that for the large parts it's how he has built his following. I've taken a lot of notes (I got e-book as well, so I used that later) on how I am going to implement this in my organization. Working on it now!

Audible.

I like Pat Flynn. He's fun to listen to. This was more like listening to an extended podcast, and if consumed that way, it was enjoyable. Nothing earth-shattering or new, just a new set of stories reminding business owners that they serve the audience, the audience isn't there to serve them.

I’m not one of Pat’s super fans as I’ve never bought any of his courses but I do listen to his podcasts and read his books. I think this is a great book for those solopreneurs that want to create a community around what they do. It has really helpful and actionable advice.

Warto, polecam!

I will admit that I’ve listened to all of his podcast episodes and taken courses from Pat. I am a super fan of him because I love how real and just down to earth he is. He also gives generously in everything he does. My review might be biased because of that because I totally read the book in his voice - his personality is exactly the way it’s portrayed in the book. Also while it’s not ground breaking principles, it still does a good job of outlining the warmth scale for small businesses to move their audience/market through and touches just a bit on the psychology of sales.

Solid book if you run your own online business.

There are so many people competing in the attention economy now. It truly is only your "superfans" who keep you going.

Pat Flynn in this short book shares how you can better serve your community and be the person they want to support.

I did find a good deal of the content to be reminders as opposed to mind-blowing and effective, but it was still well worth the time and money. There were some good nuggets strewn throughout.

The Heart and Soul of the Most Admired Enterprises

Having superfans means you and your enterprise are loved and trusted by others. Superfans are those people who love and buy much of what you create because it resonates deeply and meaningfully with them. This type of customer is what the most admired companies and brands in the world desire, develop and cultivate. Superfans help create stability, security, and market position for enterprises. But how do the most successful businesses do it? Even more challenging, how can YOU develop superfans, even if it’s just you doing what you do?

Pat Flynn provides a natural and progressive approach to acquiring strong fans. In the major parts of his book, he walks the reader along the path of developing a casual audience into an active audience, then building a connected community, and then providing opportunities that allow the most enthusiastic supporters to become superfans.

It is comforting to know that the economics of having superfans for your brand or business does not require having a huge number of superfans. It requires identifying the few who you make a big difference to, and who in turn will happily promote what you do and buy your products. This requires that you research, listen, and ask questions to find out what they really want and where their pain points are. If you are concerned and creative enough to help them out, or at least to ask a great question that helps them figure it out, you can start to develop such fans. Pat gives guidance on how to identify and find such people. He then shows how to give even more to develop them into great fans, i.e., superfans, and in some cases, even provide opportunities for the most enthusiastic to become business associates.

I am a superfan of Pat Flynn. Why? Pat is an authentic online business development master (e.g., Smart Passive Income podcast, other excellent books and online courses) with an enlightening and refreshing approach to helping others. He spends much time educating people and answering questions through his various channels and products. I find it easy to understand the wisdom of Pat’s ways and recommendations. Typically, I find it hard to put a book’s recommendations for business growth into useful perspective and balance because there are so many books and different opinions available. Pat wrote this book based on real experiences, and his authenticity and expertise in sharing experiences and providing actionable suggestions are a natural extension of his nurturing personality.

Pat’s superpower is making complex subjects easy to comprehend and put into practice. He helps the reader decide on the next best step to take, whether they are a rank beginner or someone already in a successful business. Pat clearly describes proven ideas that work to take any size enterprise to the next level in terms of having a customer base consisting of strong fans. At the end of each chapter, he asks insightful questions, which if the reader will spend some time thinking about and answering, can yield valuable results. As Pat explains and illustrates with real examples, business growth and success are never really about the enterprise. Instead the best businesses are all about helping others in the way that people need, want, and ultimately love, full of personal connection with mutual support and admiration. For many people in business, personal connection is a scary proposition. But coming from an introvert like Pat, he has overcome such tendencies and developed a unique ability to walk you through the path that he has taken to get to where he is—a successful online entrepreneur and an authentic and relatable person and brand.

This book encourages one to think of how they can better contribute to others and become more valuable. Every enterprise should strive to have customers who absolutely love their products and services. Pat’s approaches to finding ways to connect directly, meaningfully and authentically with people are what you learn in this book. These practices will be implemented by the most successful marketers of the future. Other approaches that are simply mechanisms to blast out promotions to email lists will never be able to compete with the strong personal connections fostered by the methods Pat advocates in his book.

This doesn’t mean that connection can substitute for quality. The underlying message is that after listening to real unsolved issues and concerns, one may learn enough to understand and provide a worthwhile solution that solves real problems and resonates deeply with people. And that is the start of the path to developing superfans. This book provides a commonsense step-by-step approach to developing great fans for your enterprise by listening, providing solutions, testing them out, and refining them until they are great.

I immediately purchased this book well in advance of publication as soon as I got word of its existence, and months after that was provided with the opportunity to read an advance copy for review. I look forward to applying the suggestions from the book to my work. This book is well worth anyone’s time who is interested in developing a great business that is loved and talked about by others.

I'm giving this a 3.5 but rounding it up to 4. Building an engaged community around your small business has been my mantra for years and I was really excited to read this book because I think Pat Flynn does a brilliant job of this with his own businesses. I was hoping to get some great insight.

And I did - but not until the last few chapters. The first 2/3 of the book didn't teach me anything I didn't already know (after 20 years in retail and another 10 running my own client and member focused businesses) and wasn't already doing but... I don't want that to deter anyone. If building a community around your business and is a new endeavor for you or something you maybe haven't been on top of in your current business, there is a LOT here for you to digest and take action with. Pat gives lots of great examples and ideas for you to build your own group of super fans and his reverse pyramid is an excellent way to illustrate that this is a process that requires a lot of foundation building.

But where I did find a lot of helpful information was taking that final push at the tip of the pyramid. I took loads of notes and have lots of ideas to ponder now. I also really liked how he touched on the darker side of having super fans and covered off some basic, but not always obvious, safety precautions to take.

Here's why I only gave it 3/5 out 5 instead of a full 4. There were so many additional resources that you had to go out side of the book to get and when reading this in a kindle it was a giant pain in the butt to toggle back and forth - not to mention distracting. I get why he did it but I would really have preferred to have the info IN the book instead of in a secondary spot where, let's be honest, I'm unlikely to visit very often. Otherwise, this was one of the more useful business books I've read recently.

This is an excellent book filled with great ideas on ways to connect with and build your audience.

I've been a passive follower of Pat Flynn for a while now, since hearing him on several marketing podcasts. but never enough to seek out his products.

But having read this book, that might change. Pat clearly has a lot of great ideas about marketing the right way, connecting with your audience, and transforming casual browsers into what he calls super fans.

Pat does his own narration for this book and it quickly becomes clear that he's put a lot of time and attention into the production. His narration is clear, understandable, and conversational, while still being pleasant to listen to.

Although, by it's very nature, there's not a lot of specificity to the strategies presented in this book (it would have to be specific to one industry for that), it's easy to see how almost all of it could be adapted to almost any entrepreneurial endeavor.

And following even a third of the strategies presented will surely have a huge impact on any business.

Bravo, Pat.

Read this book for work purposes, as I'm working with Facebook communities. Was glad to realize that our work tactics are already doing about 75-80% of what has been described in this book. However, I was still able to pick a few good points here and there to improve our work.

This book is very well-written. Super easy and quick to read. I loved the casual language style and thought the examples provided in the book are interesting and fun. Closer to the end of the book, it started feeling like there could have been fewer examples just prolonging the reader from the main point.

Overall, really glad I found this book. Would definitely suggest to all small business owners or those, who are planning to start their own business.

I've read a lot of book about customer service and building a fan base. I'm even writing a book that includes some of those ideas right now! So I was prepared for this to be another very similar book, where I might get one or two new nuggets. Instead I was delighted to find a book full of fresh ideas, honest struggles, and creative tactics.

Ideas included how to create special experiences for your most passionate customers, without making the others feel left out, using video messages to cut through the crowd of messaging, and the power of sharing some of your quirks and hobbies with your community.

If you're an influencer or expert of some kind, then I highly recommend this book.

I really like Pat Flynn, I've followed him for years - but reading this in 2023 is really unnecessary. Most of the concepts are now outdated and the writing is pretty fluffy. It really falls under the "should have been a blog post" category.

Tačiau to nepakanka.
3. Parodykite darbo užkulisius, įtraukite bendruomenę, leiskite jiems pasijusi jūsų verslo dalimi.
4. Suteikite savo fanams vardą. Dažnai didesnės bendruomenės suteikia sau bendrą pavadinimą. Na, pavyzdžiui „Žalgirio“ krepšinio fanai gali būti pavadinti „žalgiriečiais“.
5. Leiskite jūsų bendruomenei susiburti. Kurkite renginius, kuriuose jie gali tarpusavyje bendrauti ir susipažinti, networkinti.
6. Dalinkitės dėmesiu – parodykite savo sekėjų pasiekimus, pasidalinkite ko jiems pavyko pasiekti, kuo žavitės.
Bendruomenė = superfanai
1. Suteikite netikėto dėmesio. Pavyzdžiui pagirkite, atsiųskite vaizdo ar balso žinutę, būtent asmeniškai tam žmogui.
2. Įtraukite aktyviausius narius. Pavyzdžiui vieną iš superfanų paskirkite administruoti savo Facebook puslapį.

This book is AWESOME.

Most marketing audiobooks disappoint me, either losing me in technical details when what I want is strategy, or are just a guru firing out big ideas... I end up getting bored or just listening to select chapters.

Superfans is so good I listened to it front to back over 4 days just during car rides and breaks, house cleaning, etc... and now I am starting it over AGAIN.

Why would I listen to it twice in a row? With example after example, Pat shows what engagement looks like, and how making it happen really isn't that hard if you just follow simple practices of involving people, showing them they matter, and giving them reasons and opportunity to connect. It's practical, easy to follow, and full of clear examples and simple explanations. Pat lays out a simple roadmap for how to reach, create, cultivate and interact with fans of your business, product, or - you.

But I'm not listening again JUST for Pats' specific examples (though this time I'm going to stop and take notes at the best ones), but also because it has me thinking more clearly about how to build a community for my business.

It also helps that Pat is a great speaker. He has a very friendly, engaging style, incorporating examples from his own business and life as well as countless examples from other businesses.

If you're looking for a strategy book, not a technical 'how to' (the Internet is full of 'how to's... to me it's the strategy that is in short supply), this is the book for you.

This book is specific to building, well, superfans. Superfans are your tribe, your following, the people who will in you and your brand without question. If you develop a new product or service, they are the first to sign up. If you have advice or recommendations to give, they are the first to take note. This book is not about manipulating people, but instead about harnessing the right tools and the right time to spread your message. Pat supports missions that serve others. The goal of building Superfans is not to build wealth - that is a nice byproduct - but to reach more people to serve. This book will help you do just that.

“Once you’ve found the people in your target audience and begun learning about their problems—and most importantly, how they talk about those problems—you’ll be setting yourself up to connect with that audience authentically and effectively for as long as you’re in business.”

“Your role, instead, is to find out what people are talking about, and more importantly, how they’re talking about it.”

“You don’t need to change the entire world to build a successful business; you just need to change someone’s world.”

“When you become a superfan of something, it’s not because of a person, a product, a name, or a brand. You become a superfan because of how that person, product, or brand makes you feel.”

“If you can define the problem better than your target customer, they will automatically assume you have the solution.”

I think if you're 'a certain age' probably under 35, maybe even 40 you'll find this book valuable. The author seems a genuinely nice guy, with a good sense of humour, a nice family ethic, an honesty about his own motives, a clear vision for his tribe and a sincere desire to serve.

The book is clear, easy to follow and helpful with some good actionable points and a free course -which was great for clarification as I listened to the audio version which he narrated, hilariously (with endless extra content notes) and competently himself.

However, if you're as old as me and remember Jay Abraham and Jim Rohn's work, or Bandler/Grinder even via Tony Robbins early stuff (before he wanted to be called Anthony) then you're in for more of a reminder of the classics, updated for the internet age than any new material.

That's not because he plagiarises - he doesn't. Just that possibly unknowingly, he repeats a lot of classic advice from the greats like Zig, Jay and Jim.

I'm giving four stars because I liked him and listened to the very end - however he lost a star because I didn't hear a single thing I didn't already know. But that said, I've recommended it to several younger friends and family members.

A book that has become a classic read for the marketing professional which I had not had the chance to read until now.
Covers several key concepts aimed at building strong, loyal relationships with your audience:

Pat Flynn uses the Pyramid of Fandom as a framework to categorizes fans based on their
Level of engagement and commitment to a brand or community. Here's a breakdown of the
Pyramid:

1. Casual Audience: At the base of the pyramid are casual audience members who are aware
of your brand but haven't yet engaged deeply with it. They may have come across your content or
products casually, but they haven't formed a strong connection yet.

2. Active Participants: The next level consists of active participants who have taken some action
to engage with your brand. This could include subscribing to your email list, following you on
social media, or regularly consuming your content.

3. Engaged Community: Moving up the pyramid, you have an engaged community of fans
who actively participate in discussions, share your content with others, and contribute to the
community's growth and vibrancy. They feel a sense of belonging and camaraderie with other
Members.
