<p style=”text-align: left;”>2017 was the year that 25 infamously won AOTY over Lemonade. That said, there was a huge elephant in the room: David Bowie’s latest masterpiece, Blackstar, was blocked by the committee</p>
That album was released right after his death in early 2016, met with universal acclaim and named of of the Best albums of the decade by several music publications. He won all the four nominations he received that year (4/4), although he never was a Grammy darling (he had only won one Grammy before that)-

July 4, 2024 at 6:46 pm #1205878314Honey, we have already discussed this. If unblocked, David Bowie would NOT have won Album of the Year. No one was beating Adele.
ReplyCopy URLJuly 4, 2024 at 6:53 pm #1205878316It’s making sense since they gave Ray Charles a posthumous victory. I also think Radiohead got blocked in favor of Bieber or Drake.

July 4, 2024 at 7:06 pm #1205878321I mean, yeah, there was no way that Drake was being nominated that year without a committee choosing the 5 albums
July 8, 2024 at 7:28 am #1205880233Sweeping his genre nominations indicates he had enough support for a general field nomination, so it seems obvious the committee blocked him.
If nominated, he might have beaten Adele, or split the vote and taken more votes from 25 than from Lemonade, but we’ll never know for sure.

Sam smith – record/song/pop album, lost to beck with 1 other win
Lady a – record/song/country album, lost to arcade fire in their sole career win
Amy – record/song/pop album, lost to herbie hancock with 1 other win
Beck and Herbie were kinda career wins. I suspect Lady A at least in part didn’t win cuz that would have been back to back country wins.
25 would obviously still have taken pop solo/pop album, I assume roty, and I’d lean soty too. So I think with that hardware, aoty would have been included in the sweep even with bowie in. Sam & Amy lost to career wins but were obvious New Artist winners so the voters might’ve thought it’d be nice to go with a veteran over a dominant newbie for the top prize.
ReplyCopy URLJuly 10, 2024 at 9:04 pm #1205882387He could have, but there was also the era where veterans fell off with voters in the general field and the industry was so heavy on the Adele juice. I don’t think it was a sure bet David Bowie would have prevailed. 25, despite what people might say about its quality, was such a monumental followup to another monumental album. It was probably hard to stop the Adele train that year.
ReplyCopy URLJuly 10, 2024 at 9:59 pm #1205882403Lemonade could win AOTY since I can see Blackstar and 25 split votes from those veterans
