According to IDC, global video game revenues will grow 20% to $179.7 billion by 2020, making video game production more profitable than the global movie industry and the entire North American sports industry combined. According to the Motion Picture Association, film industry revenues in 2019 hit the $100bn mark for the first time and PwC estimates that North American sports will bring in more than $75bn in 2020.
However, both of these industries have suffered markedly from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, while the video game industry, by contrast, is showing double-digit growth in percentage terms. Experts predict that rapid growth will continue in 2021, thanks to the recent launch of a new generation of Sony and Microsoft gaming consoles and new games – even when quarantine measures are lifted.
“I think growth will slow down once effective, cheap, globally available vaccines become available, but I’m fairly confident that by the end of 2021 billions of people will still need vaccines,” Lewis Ward, IDC’s director of gaming research, told MarketWatch. – So, I think the slowdown is going to happen in 2022.”
The video game industry has boomed in recent years because of the variety of platforms and methods of play. Sales are growing in all sectors: digital sales of major titles, mobile games, conditional free-to-play projects with micropayments, cross-platform games, streaming services like Google Stadia, subscriptions like Microsoft Game Pass, Steam analog shops, VR, and so on.

I recently got DOOM and although I’ve been playing for a couple of weeks I’m not really impressed. The campaign was short and pointless…the story recycled and not remotely interesting…the overall length no more than 20 hours. The multiplayer was more promising. I played the beta when it was out and thought it was pretty fun, but right now playing DOOM MP is also really pointless. There’s almost no one playing the game and I don’t see any reason to hold on to it. They’re also asking 40 bucks for a season pass for some trivial BS and I’m not down with that. Overall the game is taking up about 80GB of space (30GB for the DLC that I didn’t buy) and isn’t really living up to it’s name. I’d rather play Doom III again….THAT was a great and terrifying game.
I’ve also purchased Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst….but so far it is also underwhelming. I feel like the controls are harder to deal with than the first game…maybe I’m just out of practice. I’ll keep playing it, just to see where it goes, but right now I’m kinda reluctant to pick it back up.
On my 3DS, I just finished Phoenix Wright: Spirit of Justice. That game was awesome! I love the Phoenix Wright series and I’ve played all of the games. Of course it does get a bit repetitive, but I find it challenging (entertaining) enough to keep me coming back. It got really twisted at the end of this one and I found it to be pretty interesting. I hope they make more, they’re just a great waste of time.
Other than that, I’m still playing Battlefield 1. That game is great no matter how much I play. I do wish there was more variety…and I guess if I dish out another $50 (!!!) bucks for the DLC I would get it. But I don’t really feel like spending that much money on a game…so I’ll probably be stuck with what I have. Oh well. It’s still entertaining enough to keep around and people play it all the time so there’s no issue of finding a full server. I find it pretty easy to play so it’s nice to play a few rounds just to chill out and relax.
