Hillary Clinton debated Biden and Trump. She’s setting expectations for both.
The former secretary of State is leaning into an expectations game leading up to Thursday’s debate.by JARED MITOVICH
POLITICO
06/25/2024 10:28 AM EDTHillary Clinton, the only person to debate both Donald Trump and Joe Biden, spoke directly to the “excruciating pressure” she felt debating Trump during her failed 2016 presidential bid—and provided advice for battling a former president who she said would be vengeful and vociferous again on Thursday.
In a New York Times op-ed previewing the upcoming faceoff this week, Clinton invoked Biden’s “direct and forceful” State of the Union performance this year as a model for how he should combat Trump. But no matter Biden’s performance or Trump’s “drama,” the audience should focus on the high stakes of the election, Clinton said.
Her piece leans into an expectations game that is being played by allies of both candidates in the lead-up to the debate, with Clinton writing: “We’re picking a president, not ‘best actor.’”
The former secretary of State said that Trump interrupts, insults, lies—and stalks—to distract viewers from concerning comments that foreshadow how he governs. In one example, she cited a past pledge during their third 2016 debate to appoint Supreme Court justices who would overturn Roe v. Wade, and added that viewers should interpret his current proposal to leave abortion policy to the states as an endorsement of “the most extreme abortion bans” across the country.
“It’s because of Mr. Trump that in Louisiana a young girl unable to get an abortion went into labor clutching a teddy bear,” Clinton wrote.
Clinton also wrote of Trump’s refusal to commit to accepting the election results in 2016—promising to “keep you in suspense”—which at the time she called a threat to democracy.
“You can draw a straight line from that exchange to the deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021,” she wrote.
Because of past remarks like these about abortion, democracy, and the economy, Clinton said viewers should watch for Trump to preview an even more chaotic presidency that will threaten freedoms and worsen inflation. It won’t be a “rerun” of his first term, she added—though she cautioned that this will be the case “no matter what happens in the debate.”
In response to a request for comment, Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung called Clinton a “sore loser” who was still obsessing over the outcome of the 2016 election, accusing her of “Trump Derangement Syndrome” and trying to stay relevant.
“Joe Biden should look over his shoulder because if he’s not careful, he might get Hillary’d,” Cheung wrote in a statement, appearing to reference her loss to Trump.
Clinton’s first-hand preview of how Trump will debate on Thursday—and her defense of Biden—is the latest in a chorus of Democrats and Republicans raising or lowering expectations for each candidate. She warned of those who watch debates “like drama critics,” creating expectations for Trump so low that “if he doesn’t literally light himself on fire on Thursday evening, some will say he was downright presidential.”
By contrast, Clinton said that Biden is disadvantaged by the precedent of poorer first debate performances for incumbents, which she attributed to the demands of the presidency taking away time for preparation. Biden will win if the “story comes through” of his sincere work to repair the American economy after the pandemic, lowering inflation, creating jobs, and investing in efforts to combat climate change.
“Yes, he’s 81,” Clinton wrote. “That’s just three years older than Mr. Trump. And his lifetime of service and experience helps him get things done that make our country stronger and all of our lives better.”
The choice between either candidate is clear, she added: “a convicted criminal out for revenge and a president who delivers results for the American people.”
Clinton also announced Tuesday the upcoming release of an essay collection titled “Something Lost, Something Gained: Reflections on Life, Love, & Liberty,” which will include the former secretary of State’s reflections on losing the 2016 election. The collection will be available Sept. 17—nearly eight years after her first debate with Trump.

BY JARED GANS 06/25/24 9:22 PM ETGeorge Latimer has unseated Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.) in the Democratic primary in New York’s 16th Congressional District, Decision Desk HQ projects, delivering a stinging blow to progressives in what has been the party’s most divisive primary of the cycle.
Latimer, a Westchester County executive, defeated Bowman in a fierce contest that became a proxy battle between differing ideological factions of the Democratic Party, with the pivotal issue separating the candidates being their stances toward Israel amid the country’s ongoing war with Palestinian militant group Hamas.
Millions of dollars poured into the race from both inside and outside the district, making it the most expensive House primary in history. Leaders of both wings of the party weighed in, with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.) endorsing the moderate Latimer, while Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) supported Bowman.
Bowman became a member of the “Squad,” a group of the most progressive Democrats in the House, after winning his House seat in 2020. His first election came through his own successful primary challenge to unseat a moderate longtime incumbent, then-Rep. Eliot Engel (D).
His race against Latimer laid bare the divisions within the Democratic Party that have been even more pronounced in the aftermath of Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel that killed roughly 1,200 people. The riff has grown as the death toll in Gaza has continued to climb since Israel launched its counteroffensive, surpassing 35,000, according to the Hamas-run Palestinian health ministry.
Latimer centered much of his campaign around Bowman’s comments and votes regarding the conflict. He has gone after Bowman for calling for a permanent cease-fire between Israel and Hamas as well as opposing additional arms shipments to Israel.
Latimer also slammed the incumbent’s comments in November calling reports of Hamas committing rape and other sexual violence on Oct. 7 “lies” and “propaganda.” Bowman later walked back those comments and apologized for them last week, saying he voted to condemn the sexual violence that occurred after the United Nations provided additional evidence that it happened.
But Latimer supporters used Bowman’s comments about the sexual violence that occurred in mailers to voters to attack him.
Some Democratic voters demonstrated the divide in the party over the war through the presidential primaries, with a relatively small but not insignificant portion of voters choosing an “uncommitted” option instead of voting for President Biden to protest his administration’s handling of the war.
But this was the clearest face-off yet between the factions within the party.
The battle between Latimer and Bowman grew intense at times, especially during the few debates they engaged in.
Latimer alleged that Bowman’s words have undermined Israel’s right to defend itself and exist and accused Bowman of ignoring constituents like those who are Asian or not Black or brown. Meanwhile, Bowman accused Latimer of using a “racist dog whistle” in saying Bowman’s “constituency” was Dearborn, Mich., a predominantly Arab-American area represented by Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), another Squad member and staunch Israel critic.
Both rejected the allegations.
The 16th District is a heavily Jewish area but also has Arab-American residents.
Polling in the lead-up to the primary showed that Bowman could be highly vulnerable to being ousted. Latimer led Bowman in a poll from earlier this month by 17 points.
Bowman’s loss makes him the first incumbent House Democrat to lose a primary challenge this election cycle. Latimer is almost certain to win the House seat in November in the solidly blue district.

BY JARED GANS 06/25/24 9:51 PM ETFormer CNN anchor John Avlon has won the Democratic nomination for the seat representing New York’s 1st Congressional District, Decision Desk HQ projects.
Avlon defeated Nancy Goroff, a professor emeritus of chemistry at Stony Brook University, to win the nomination to face Rep. Nick LaLota (R-N.Y.). Goroff was the Democratic nominee for the seat in 2020, losing to then-Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-N.Y.) by about 10 points.
Democrats will target the district in November as part of the party’s attempt to retake a majority in the House.
Avlon had the support of a few prominent New York Democrats, including Reps. Tom Suozzi, Gregory Meeks, and Dan Goldman.
But Avlon may still have an uphill battle to win the seat, as the nonpartisan election handicapper Cook Political Report rates the race as “likely Republican.”

BY CAROLINE VAKIL 06/25/24 9:18 PM ETRep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) has won the GOP primary in Colorado’s eastern 4th Congressional District, according to Decision Desk HQ.
Boebert defeated a group of Republican challengers to prevail in the Republican contest to replace former Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.), defying assumptions early on in the primary cycle that her days in Congress were numbered.
The Colorado Republican, who currently represents the western 3rd Congressional District, initially ran for another term in that district, after narrowly winning her second term against Democrat Adam Frisch by several hundred votes in 2022.
She decided late last year to instead run in the eastern—and safely red—4th Congressional District to avoid another expensive and competitive House race. But Boebert’s path to winning the Republican nomination was far from certain when she decided to run in the new district.
For one, Boebert fielded attacks from new opponents who called her a carpetbagger.
She was also dogged by unflattering headlines after she was caught vaping and causing a disturbance at a “Beetlejuice” musical in Denver last year, forcing her to publicly address and apologize for the incident in conversations with voters.
Perhaps Boebert’s biggest concern, however, was when Buck announced he would be retiring early, triggering a special election for the seat. To make matters worse, the special election to finish his term was scheduled on the same day as the GOP primary for the full two-year term.
Boebert opted against running in the special election because doing so would have required her to step down from her current 3rd District seat, triggering a special election to fill the rest of her term. That would have been a precarious move given Republicans’ narrow House majority and the fact her seat was almost within Democrats’ reach last cycle.
But by not running in the special election, Boebert was vulnerable to the possibility that one of her challengers could win the special election and be seen as the favorite for the regular GOP primary.
Boebert was ultimately able to defy the odds because the Republican candidate who was picked to run in the special election, former Parker Mayor Greg Lopez, said he only wanted to run to complete Buck’s term and not run for the full term. That allowed Boebert to remain competitive in the regular GOP primary.
She also caught a stroke of luck again when she won the highest percentage of votes at the 4th Congressional District Assembly, allowing her to be placed first on the ballot. Her financial edge and endorsement from former President Trump also aided her.
Boebert is now expected to take on likely Democrat winner Ike McCorkle. Trump won the seat by 19 points in 2020, making Boebert the heavy favorite to win the seat in November.

BY CAROLINE VAKIL 06/25/24 9:20 PM ETRepublican candidate Greg Lopez has won the special election to carry out the remainder of former Rep. Ken Buck’s (R-Colo.) term in Congress, according to Decision Desk HQ.
Lopez, a former mayor of Parker, Colo., defeated Democrat Trisha Calvarese, who’s previously worked at the AFL-CIO and National Science Foundation, in the race to represent Colorado’s eastern 4th Congressional District until early January. November’s election will decide who takes Buck’s seat for the next full term.
Lopez and Calvarese were chosen to run for the special election by their respective parties, vying to replace Buck, who announced this year he was retiring before the end of his term.
Lopez only ran for the special election to replace Buck and not the GOP primary for the two-year term, meaning he’ll only be doing a temporary stint in Congress. The primary for November’s election is also being held on Tuesday.
Lopez was seen as the likely victor given that former President Trump won the district in 2020 by 19 points.

Isaac Rabin wasn’t shot by a Palestinian, for example. We don’t know the details, but well, some things are crystal clear by now: the shooter was a Republican, by the fact that he owned the weapon, likely a NRA supporter, and obviously not “left” by any means. Which induces me to think, that Trump has polarized society so much, that even hardcore republicans see him as the threat he is. I hope I am wrong, but the events of the last 24 hours, have certified that a new Civil War is closer than people might imagine, and for sure also certified that Trump will win the election by a landslide… unless the Democrats force Biden to quit, and have some polar opposite like Bernie Sanders step in, for the nomination.
