I enjoyed the flashback today of Katherine and Jill’s final scene. I really miss Jeanne Cooper. She was a unique presence on Y&R. I followed their story from the very beginning. Throughout the various phases of their relationship, their scenes were always entertaining.

The Katherine/Jill flashback was nice, and Jill seemingly getting the Chancellor mansion restored to its previous look rather than the drab makeover Billy gave it was also great. I was shocked, though, skipping through the episode, to see Victor having the remainder of his sentence commuted (that line from the judge about being rehabilitated was the biggest load of BS I’ve heard from a soap judge, including the crooked ones) and the Newmans gathering around him. I hadn’t watched much of the show in a while, and my how things have changed.

Honestly, I find the show very boring right now. The big story is that Chloe is back and I really don’t care. The show is perpetually dipping into the past and revisiting overplayed characters and stories. It’s time to move on.

If they really want to honor the show’s history, bring on legacy characters from the Foster/Brooks families. That would be both old and new.

The show’s biggest asset is Camryn Grimes. Love, love, love her.

The anniversary clips today with Josh Morrow and Amelia Heinle were great!

The scenes with Daniel and Mariah were excellent. If only he could stay!

Luca was arrested. It looks like his storyline is coming to an end. I am beyond disappointed. He is a character with tons of potential played by an outstanding actor.

Evidently, TPTB think that the Billy/Phyllis story is gold. I disagree. I do not find it even slightly interesting. It doesn’t help that Travis seems more like Billy than Billy.

As much as I admire Justin Hartley, I am not enjoying Adam’s story.

I’ve been enjoying all the intros these past two weeks. The intros have been better then the show itself. My favorite was the Lauren/Michael /Paul /Christine. My favorite four. To bad none of them were featured in that eppy.

The Phyllis /Billy storyline is gross. I’m hoping Phyllis will wake up and their affair was just a bad dream (I know wishful thinking).

I loved how they included Lee Philip Bell (co-creater) in todays show. The scene she was in with Christine /Paul was sweet and well written.

I agree that the clips from over the years were fun to watch. The only downside is that they captured the heart and soul of the show in such a way that as to emphasize its lack of heart and soul today.

In a matter of days, Y&R lost Justin Hartley and squandered Miles Gaston Villanueva; we are left with old man Newman, psycho Chloe, serious Billy, and angry Phyllis.

We definitely need to see more of Mariah. A lot more.

TPTB need to start watching reruns from the 1970s to revisit the unique style that elevated the show to success.

So the news is official: Chuck Pratt is out as Head Writer. A new Head Writer has not yet been assigned, but rumor has it that Y&R is in talks with Sally Sussman Morina, who was part of the writing team throughout the 1980s. This could work out rather well, as Sussman Morina is familiar with the show in terms of both history and style.

I hope whoever becomes head writer, they make Y&R more watchable. Focus on the vets; add romance, not just bed hopping; and write character driven storylines instead of plots.

Update: Sally Sussman Morina is confirmed as the new Head Writer of Y&R. I am excited to see how she balances the show’s rich history with the need to overcome the repetitive nature of their storytelling.

Gatorman, I agree with your wish list. However, I do think they have focused on the vets. It’s just that the storytelling has not been good. While I love my vets, Y&R needs to get some new young blood to move the show forward. It’s all about striking a rewarding balance, rather than just recycling the same tired story lines.

I would love to see the show revisit some of the stylistic elements that initially catapulted the show to ratings success. The music, cinematography, and sets all distinguished the show from others during the 70s and 80s (and even the 90s to a degree).

In its time, Y&R was considered an opulent, modern, youth-oriented drama when it debuted in 1973. That has been lost in the endless repetition of story lines and lack of character evolution.

Recapturing the unique style and relevance of the show would be a great way to honor its history.

As a longtime viewer, I would find it fun to see the arrival of characters descending from the original Brooks and Foster families.

Upon hearing the news of a new writer, my mother commented, “Let’s hope they hire a writer who makes criminals pay for their crimes.”

I know others like Gina Tognoni’s Phyllis but I must say I really have not been enjoying her performances lately. I find her dull and uninteresting in this role. She is far too severe.

I can tell when a show isn’t holding my interest since I switch channels and that has been happening a great deal with Y&R lately ): Just not thrilled with the storytelling. I still wish that Mariah would be elevated to lead on the show and that storylines would be developed around her character in particular.

I am angry that Nikki is back with Victor. It makes me cringe. Can’t she get over her addiction to him already? She was showing real growth and now she’s back to being his doormat! Grrr!

Criminals used to pay for their crimes on soaps but now everything is backwards. It gets really tiresome!

I think there’s an all-soaps mandate that criminals can’t pay for their crimes, unless you really like the character and/or actor and think maybe they have some mitigating factor.

The Sally Sussman Morina news is GREAT for Y&R. She brings a lot of heart as a head writer, which is something Y&R desperately needs. I found the biggest problem in trying to watch the show regularly was that I just didn’t care about any of the characters. No investment at all. I think she could fix that for sure.

More good news for Y&R: Kay Alden has signed on as a storyline consultant. Alden served as a writer for the show almost from the beginning. Her years as head writer (1998-2006) were very good for Y&R.

While I enjoyed the scenes between Sharon and Patty, the storyline is marred by the absence of 3 of the key players.

While I enjoy the actors, I am not enjoying any of the stories ): I like Travis and see potential between him and Ashley but otherwise everything is falling flat for me.

I am annoyed that Nikki is back with Victor): I don’t like Jason Thompson’s Billy at all, and I still can’t stand Gina Tognoni’s sour Phyllis ): and all the real criminals get away with their crimes, but the ones we actually like go to jail (and off the show) ):

Again, I wish Mariah was the complicated heroine and center of the show.

I was surprised when I was looking through the cast list to learn that Hunter King is recurring and not on contract. Interesting, because she gets a ton of screen time anyway. Some actors decide it’s better to not be on contract; I suppose it frees them to do outside work if they want to.

Freeman: “I wish Mariah was the complicated heroine and center of the show.” I agree 100%!

Steve Burton has announced that he is leaving the show, so I guess the baby switch reveal is imminent. November sweeps?
