So now Clyde has had the Horton house burned down and nearly killed Chad DiMera and his two young children in the process (not to mention Julie and Doug), had someone try to kill Lucas at the Brady Pub, had a police detective shot and nearly killed, and framed a Kiriakis for that shooting. It really doesn’t make sense for Clyde to continue to be an issue for much longer. Everyone who has any sort of reach on the show despises him. He’s been running afoul of the DiMeras for like a decade now. He’s blackmailing Ava Vitali. He’s screwing with the Kiriakises. It would be unbelievable for him to be around for much longer.

Other than that, I’m enjoying most of what’s happening on the show. I could use considerably less of Ava and Stefan, and the behind-the-scene happenings are a dumpster fire, but I like the majority of what’s on screen.

I was excited to read that Eli and Lani will be back on the show next week visiting Paulina. I remember reading that they were supposed to be back around Christmas, but that got shuffled for some reason, maybe related to the strike. It didn’t sound like the two of them would be hanging around long, though it would be nice to have more of the Horton family around as the show delves into a story exploring the family’s history and the rebuilding of the Horton house, which also sounds like it will be enjoyable.

But the lack of Hortons around as this story kicks off highlights the show’s problem with its lack of legacy characters, especially younger ones. Belle, Shawn, JJ, Theo, and Claire should all be in town and involved with the many tragedies and difficulties that their families are experiencing right now. It would also be nice, of course, to have some presence of Hope, Bo and Ciara. I can’t believe that the only lasting on-screen impact from the storyline that was essentially Beyond Salem 3 is that Harris Michaels is somehow now the show’s leading man.

I watched yesterday’s episode online and boy was it ever BORING! Absolutely nothing interesting happened… Gwen is now Teresa, which is beyond weird! (Of course Ben is now Alex, which is even more weird!) (; I am not missing anything apparently…

I saw that Alison Sweeney will be doing a return visit – is that soon? She and Chandler are always worth watching even when the storylines aren’t good.

Haha. To be fair, Tuesday’s episode was mostly the people ruminating on the developments in the previous couple of episodes (Theresa upset about Alex not proposing to her, Sloan upset that Eric fell asleep with the baby while she was putting on lingerie, Brady upset about getting into a huge fight with Kristen in front of Rachel) and the tail end of Valentine’s Day. This is, to me, a pretty good set of stories, on days when we don’t have to deal with Ava and Stefan and Harris, though I guess more is happening there.

Yesterday’s episode was incredible, the best one in a very long time. I would imagine it was moving and beautiful for anyone who has a decent amount of history with the show. I loved seeing so many veteran characters gather at the remains of the Horton house and talking about the family’s legacy. The constructed flashbacks of Alice and Tom in the 1930s were lovely, and the real flashbacks were wonderful to see. It delighted me seeing Alice on screen again. I was so relieved that they discovered the ornaments perfectly intact, and the closing montage of Horton family and friends over the years moved me to tears. This is one of those episodes that, in the 90s, I would have saved on VHS and watched again and again.

I haven’t seen anything about Alison Sweeney returning. Every headline I’ve seen about her is just another Hallmark project. As far as I know, she doesn’t have anything scheduled for DAYS. Most of what I’ve seen about Sami online is fans suggesting that they recast the character, which I would also be on board with at this point. But if Ali were making a return visit, I’d be thrilled. Where did you see that news?

no no no no no no. Nobody else can and should play Sami Brady except Alison Sweeney. It would be like recasting Marlena. Hello, look how they ruined Kristen. I love Sami Brady, but if i can only see her once a year due to Alison Sweeney’s schedule, I’ll take it, they cannot ruin Sami Brady with a recast the way they did Kristen, and kind of Vivian as well.

^Agree 100%. There are certain daytime characters who should never ever be recast and Sami is one of them! (:

I can certainly understand that viewpoint, and a year ago, I would have agreed. I think it was maybe nine months ago that I said the show should just bring back Theresa and let her cause some trouble on screen for a while, and that hasn’t turned out nearly as well as I thought it might. Considering everything that has been happening in Salem with so many characters so close to Sami (Eric, Johnny, Marlena, EJ, and Nicole, to name a few), her absence has become incredibly glaring. If we were actually seeing her once a year for a couple of weeks, I wouldn’t be complaining. But she hasn’t been on since a very brief stint about 18 months ago, and I haven’t seen anything on the horizon.

A couple of notes about the Kristen recast. While I don’t think Stacy Haiduk was the best choice to play Kristen, the real ruining of the character has been in the writing of her, and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the reason they had to recast Kristen was because Eileen saw that they had in mind and said thanks but no thanks. Opinions of the Vivian recasts will vary, but I think that, particularly when Robin Strasser stepped into the role, Vivian served a function that was worth having in the story, even if the portrayal wasn’t my favorite. And after both Strasser and Linda Dano, Louise Sorel came back and reclaimed the part, so it’s not like any permanent damage was been done. If the show hires a Sami recast and it’s terrible, they can just part ways with her. I don’t think it would be easy, though. I’ve seen people online saying that Gina Tognoni would be a great Sami recast, and I think that’s an awful idea. But someone like Rebecca Budig could be great. Honestly I think I’d rather watch even a bad Sami doing things than seeing Ava pretending to be some kind of heroine and reviving Harris from his coma with true love’s kiss. They could give the recast a three-month arc, and if it isn’t working, that can be the end of it.

I see your points as well. But i stand by my no recasting Sami Brady. They just need to incorporate some off screen phone calls with her is all, to add some closure so we know she’s aware.

That’s a good point. A couple of one-sided phone calls or even pretend Facetimes or Zooms would go a long way to at least making it feel like Sami hasn’t just been forgotten. Though even family members who are in town are being forgotten for things. When Johnny announced to EJ and Nicole the other day that he and Chanel had gotten married in Paulina’s hospital room, I kept thinking how annoyed I would have been if I were EJ. They couldn’t even call him and ask him to come stand in the hospital room while it happened? They only person they could loop in was Abe?

I really hope that the show has been paying attention to the fan response to the show of late. It’s a little difficult because there is so much complaining online, and it can be easy to just tune it all out and dismiss it equally. But there are some things that stand out.

Ava is not someone fans can get behind as a supposed heroine. I guess someone thought it was a good idea to try to lure over GH fans by having Tamara Braun paired with Steve Burton, but that feels unbelievably ill-advised. Carly Corinthos is a divisive character among GH fans, but it seems like non-GH soap viewers pretty uniformly can’t stand her. But even more importantly, Ava is a horrible person whose list of crimes include being responsible for Shawn Brady’s death, shooting Hope, kidnapping Kayla, forcing Steve to have sex with her, framing Rafe for being a dirty cop and trying her level best to murder Susan. The show has tried to sweep every gross thing she’s ever done into the mental illness bucket, which is an insult to people actually struggling with mental illness and to the people watching the show. Ava should not be on this show, either because she’s in prison or because she’s just gone elsewhere to avoid the consequences of her actions. If Tripp has to leave with her, it’s price I’m willing to pay. Here’s hoping that we see significantly less of her once Steve Burton is gone.

Clyde needs to be killed off. This man has done so many despicable things, most recently brutally murdering Abigail. It’s surprising to me that the show didn’t just kill him then, but I suppose they wanted him in their back pocket for a situation like this, where they want someone awful to look less awful in comparison to him. It’s not really working. People just hate the storyline. And here’s a thought: If you need to bring in a monster to make someone seem palatable, maybe you’re making a mistake with bringing the other character on in the first place. If this story ends with Clyde just being back in Statesville, I will be furious and honestly think someone should be fired over it.

People are sick of actors coming back as new characters. I think that poor Emily O’Brien is the nadir of this phenomenon, in that she not only replaced Jen Lilley very soon after her departure, but also changed from Gwen to Theresa within the same scene. Making EOB’s Theresa, who was always brunette until 2023, wear a blond wig and pairing her with another actor who recently had to do a similar swap, Robert Scott Wilson, is not helping at all. People also seem exhausted with Everett Lynch, I think partly because of this phenomenon, partly because the story feels both ridiculous and predictable at the same time, and partly because . . .

This incarnation of Stephanie is flopping hard. I bristle at the term ‘shrewish,’ which I think people generally invoke for a woman they don’t like, but Stephanie has been written as needlessly combative, hypocritical, fickle, judgmental, temperamental, demanding, and disingenuous about her feelings. People seem to like both Alex and Chad better when they’re not in her orbit, and I wonder if the same would be true for Everett. I don’t think it’s too late to turn things around for Stephanie, but she needs to not be the center of attention of every man in whom she shows the slightest bit of interest. Maybe she could be in a love triangle where she’s an option for someone else instead of always being in the position of dropping one man and picking up another. Shelley Hennig’s version of Stephanie really came alive when she was scrambling to make sure that Nathan didn’t get back together with Melanie.

I personally am also just very very done with both Stefan and Konstantin. I admire Steve for not just shooting Konstantin. If my son were missing and this man was in my face going on about his baklava rolls, I would not be nearly so patient.

Shelley Hennig was the best Stephanie, and I am still mad that she did not win the younger actress emmy that year when she submitted her breakup with Nathan on their wedding day. grr!! she had the best reel!!!

Good work from both the DHs (Drake Hogestyn and Deidre Hall) in Friday’s episode, as Konstantin recounts to John the story of how the Pawn (a.k.a. John) killed his daughter and Steve does the same for Marlena. Most of what John and Marlena have to do is just reacting, but it’s very well done.

It seems like a lot of things are wrapping up or moving into new phases, which is good I guess. The whole story with Paulina was completely ridiculous. She had this whole elaborate health crisis that was solved by Angel Lexie, who also gave Abe his memory back? What a missed opportunity for the show to find truly any interesting way for Abe to remember his past. And the final arc of the story was especially pointless. Paulina had a bad heart for a week because what, they just didn’t know what else to do? I know the strike writers are doing their best, but this was not good.

But nothing is as bad as the atrocious computer-generated exterior shots they’ve been using. The images are very nicely rendered, but ultimately this is no better than using a painting or a drawing of a building. It doesn’t look real, so the whole affect comes across as cheap and silly.

I had kind of forgotten that EJ and Harris have some bad blood between them because of EJ trying to have Ava killed while they were in the psychiatric facility together until after I watched Friday’s episode, annoyed that Harris was getting in EJ’s face about Clyde’s escape, which was perpetrated by Harris’ girlfriend Ava, and Stefan’s whereabouts, which Harris would probably know if he had taken any kind of precautions when he started blackmailing Stefan. Also the way Harris just drops the news that Stefan shot him, as if he hasn’t just been letting Xander sit in jail for that crime, was pretty irritating, though EJ played that situation pretty badly. His attempt to cover up his prior knowledge of the situation and need to feel like he’s in control all the time meant he couldn’t just done what he should have done, feigned surprise and said well let’s get this processed so we’re no longer holding the wrong man for the crime.

It seems like the show is waiting for the regular writing team to come back before revealing what Theresa and Konstantin did with making it appear that Alex is Victor’s son and not Xander, and I’m generally fine with waiting a bit for a payoff, but that means we’re stuck with a version of Theresa who still seems weird to me and Konstantin, who is incredibly tedious in this whole story with John having apparently killed his daughter during the Pawn era. They really should find some other way to keep Konstantin around, though, besides having Maggie being so taken with him. That seems especially true now, as I don’t see why Steve wouldn’t at least tell Maggie the who story about what happened with the Pawn, enough to prove that Konstantin has been lying to Maggie about his relationship with Victor and cast doubt on his intentions. Alex has really been on the backburner since Theresa has been focused on the Tate situation for the last couple of months, but now it looks like he and Kristen may be enacting a plan to make Brady and Theresa jealous? I like the idea of it, and Alex and Kristen are good scene partners.

I’m also looking forward to some drama potentially happening at Jude’s christening, either with Holly confessing about the drugs or something coming out about the baby. It’ll be fun to have an event that gets like 10 characters in the same room.

The latest development with Stefan is kind of annoying, but I guess I can abide the outcome. I don’t know why the show didn’t just say that Stefan never transferred his assets to EJ because EJ hadn’t actually gotten him out of town yet. Instead we had this very silly and obvious business with the chess game. The Salem PD is just giving persons of interest who show up confessing to crime board games at their request? Please. Even more nonsensically, Stefan had the presence of mind to record his conversation with EJ about EJ getting him out of town but didn’t think to ask where he would be going? Stefan was frantic and desperate, and there’s no way he actually would have had that recording. He was going to Ava to beg for help!

It looks like we’ll get back to some of the stuff with Everett this week as well, which is nice because I’ve been missing him.

Okay, more of this Alex/Kristen stuff please! All of the scenes with Kristen, Alex, Brady and Theresa had me rolling with laughter. Brady is such an idiot, but it’s true to character. Alex and Kristen have great chemistry, and every insult Theresa threw at Kristen was a hoot.
