What to watch this weekend May 31, 2024: TV awards contenders

Say what you will about Warner Bros. Discovery’s business practices, but Max knows it has a very good thing in “Hacks.” The award-winning comedy, which is likely to be the only serious competition for FX’s “The Bear” at this year’s Emmys, has already been renewed for Season 4. The news couldn’t have come at a better time, as the explosive Season 3 finale, which is titled “Bulletproof” and is now streaming, sets Deborah (Jean Smart) and Ava (Hannah Einbinder) down a surprising new path as the former’s stint as the host of a late night show officially gets underway. But their relationship isn’t the only one changing as the season comes to an end — Jimmy (co-creator Paul W. Downs) and Kayla (scene-stealer Meg Stalter) embark on a new chapter, too. A brilliant, complex and altogether hilarious look at friendship, ambition and women in Hollywood, “Hacks” is the awards contender to watch this weekend.

However, it’s not the only show worth your time. Other contenders include:

  • We Are Lady Parts”: Three years after debuting its critically acclaimed freshman run, Peacock’s series about an all-female Muslim punk band is back for a long-awaited encore. In the new six-episode season, which features a guest appearance by Malala Yousafzai, the band has completed a successful tour only to now find themselves dealing with the realities of chasing fame. Not only are they threatened by a new rival on the scene, but the stress of recording their first album forces everyone to confront their future as a band. All episodes are now streaming on Peacock.
  • Mayor of Kingstown”: Almost a year and a half after he was crushed and nearly killed by a snowplow, two-time Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner makes a triumphant return to the screen as power broker Mike McLusky in Season 3 of Paramount+’s popular crime drama. In the latest season, which sees a new Russian mobster enter the picture, Mike finds himself caught in the middle of a drug war that rages inside and outside the city’s vast prison system. The season premiere streams Sunday, June 2 on Paramount+.
  • Couples Therapy”: It’s a big week for returning programs. Showtime’s award-winning docuseries featuring real-life therapy sessions with Dr. Orna Guralnik is also back for its fourth season. Nine new episodes offer viewers an inside look at emotional sessions usually reserved for the parties involved. All episodes are now streaming on Paramount+ with Showtime, while the first two episodes will air linearly on Sunday, June 2 at 10/9c.
