I was pleased to learn that you are submitting your work on “Mad Men” for Lead Drama Actress at the upcoming Golden Globes. While you have not broken through with the HFPA for the first three seasons of the show, this could be your year. And regardless of what happens with the Globes, you must stay in Lead at the Emmy Awards as well.
You wisely moved down to Supporting at the Emmys last season. Peggy, who you portray, was a secondary character in the overall arc of the third season of the show, especially when compared to those first two years. Your move made room for your co-star January Jones in the Lead race, and gave you your best chance at an Emmy win. Archie Panjabi (“The Good Wife”) surprised us all by triumphing on the night.
Your character was front and center throughout the wonderful fourth season of “Mad Men.” Peggy was an independent-minded liberal woman going against the grain. She matched wits with Jon Hamm’s defeated and reborn Don Draper. And, as Chris Beachum noted in his memo to you (where he argues for you to drop to Supporting), your performance opposite Hamm in “The Suitcase” is a knockout submission.
However, unlike Chris, I think it can get you a slot in the depleted Lead category. Glenn Close (“Damages”) — who beat you back in 2009 — is out of the running while last year’s champ Kyra Sedgwick (“The Closer”) now has her long-overdue Emmy. Another one-time winner Mariska Hargitay (“Law & Order: SVU”) stars on a decade-old series. And your co-star January Jones should move down to Supporting. Your only real threat is Julianna Margulies (“The Good Wife”) who lost what seemed to be her race last year.
