Michael Buble has made traditional pop music cool again. The Canadian crooner, who released his self-titled debut album in 2003, has had a remarkable year and could cap it off with a slew of Grammy nominations. The older-skewing recording academy tends to favor traditional vocalists like Buble.
His fourth studio album, “Crazy Love,” was released in late 2009 and the disc’s debut single, “Haven’t Met You Yet,” camped out in Billboard’s Top 40 for nearly a year. “Crazy Love” is shaping up to be Buble’s best selling album to date. Its success revived interest in his other albums, all of which charted on the Billboard 200 in 2010.
Buble took home the Grammy for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album in both 2007 (“Call Me Irresponsible”) and 2009 (“Michael Bublé Meets Madison Square Garden”) but he has struggled to break into other categories. He has only been nominated once for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance; he lost his 2007 bid for “Everything” to Justin Timberlake for “What Goes Around Comes Around.” That should all change this year.
Besides a sure bid for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album, “Crazy Love” is a strong contender for an Album of the Year nomination. As “Haven’t Met You Yet” is an original composition, Buble could reap bids for both Record and Song of the Year. He could also contend again for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance (“Haven’t Met You Yet”) as well as Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals (“Baby, You Got What It Takes” w/Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings).
