Will “California Gurl” Katy Perry melt the Grammy voters’ hearts enough to be upgraded to the General Field or will it all just be a “Teenage Dream?”
That is the title of Perry’s third studio album which debuted last summer at #1 on the Billboard Top 200. The first single from the disc — “California Gurls” with Snoop Dogg — spent six weeks in the top slot on Billboard’s Hot 100. The title track ranked at No. 1 for two weeks while her newest hit “Firework” is currently in the top ten.
“Teenage Dream” is likely to be nominated for both Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. And Perry and Snoop should receive a nomination for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals for “California Gurls.” They could also contend for Best Music Video (Short Form). Snoop Dogg has yet to win a Grammy despite a dozen nominations dating back to 1994.
“Teenage Dream” is a solid possibilty for both Album of the Year and Song of the Year bids. And “California Gurls” could contend for Record of the Year. Two other Golden State themed tunes have won this prize —Tony Bennett‘s signature song “I Left My Heart San Francisco (1962) and The Eagles‘ “Hotel Calfornia” (1977).
Perry’s toughest competition this year is Lady Gaga. Two years ago, it was a pair of British singer-songwriters who kept her from going home with Grammy gold after she burst onto the music scene with the smash hit “I Kissed A Girl.” Despite reigning on the singles chart for seven weeks, the song only earned Perry a single nomination (Best Female Pop Vocal Performance). She lost that race to Adele (“Chasing Pavements”) who also won Best New Artist. Perry did not even get nominated for that top award with Duffy, the Jonas Brothers, Lady Antebellum and Jazmine Sullivan filling out the field.
And Perry’s best-selling disc “One of the Boys” did not even merit a 2008 nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album; Duffy won that race with “Rockferry.” Another track from the album — “Hot N Cold” — earned Perry a second consecutive Female Pop Vocal Performance last year. However, Beyonce prevailed for “Halo”.
