State Of Decay 3 Gameplay Teaser Revealed At Xbox Showcase

Undead Labs' zombie game returns after a long time away with a new trailer that mixes gameplay and story.

It's been years since State of Decay 3 was first revealed, and since then we've seen nothing about it--like, at all. But from the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase, we finally got another look, including glimpses of what appears to be gameplay for the first time.

The trailer emphasized the four-player co-op nature of the game and the open-world setting that allows for emergent stories to be created by players surviving the end of the world together. Undead Labs said State of Decay 3 will allow for much greater distances between co-op players playing in a shared-world experience after previous games had smaller maps with still stricter tethering. The trailer from today, the studio said, is entirely built with in-game assets.

State of Decay 3 will still feature permadeath too, which has long been a staple of the series. The studio has been collaborating with Obsidian to bring Grounded's shared-world save system into State of Decay 3, giving players an enhanced means of sharing their story with others. Rather than be a guest in another's world, you'll now come and go with or without them, progressing the world together or apart.

A release date, or even window, didn't accompany the reveal, but it was reiterated that the game will launch directly into Game Pass whenever it arrives.
