The Resident Evil 4 Remake Mercenaries DLC is available as a free download. This mode allows you to choose from different characters to take on hordes of hostiles, all to get a high score. Here’s our Resident Evil 4 Mercenaries characters guide to help you with each combatant’s capabilities and loadout.

Resident Evil 4 Remake - The Mercenaries character unlocks

These are the characters that are available in the Resident Evil 4 Remake Mercenaries Mode:

  • Leon Kennedy - Available by default.
  • Luis Sera - Use Leon and beat any stage with an A-rank (i.e., at least 100,000 points).
  • Jack Krauser - Use Luis and beat any stage with an A-rank.
  • Hunk - Use Krauser and beat any stage with an A-rank.

To be clear, the Resident Evil 4 Mercenaries characters all have their specific weapon and item loadouts, as well as a Mayhem Mode ability. This is a skill that grants a temporary boost, specific to a character, while also giving extra points for each enemy that you hit.

Leon Mercenaries Mode tips: Loadout and Mayhem Mode

Mayhem Mode

  • Bullet Rush - Increases Leon’s damage and speed while active.

Weapons and items

  • SG-09R with Laser Sight; 30x Handgun Ammo
  • Riot Gun; 10x Shotgun Shells
  • Stingray with High-power Scope; 5x Rifle Ammo
  • Combat Knife
  • First-Aid Spray

If you’ve been playing the campaign, then there’s a good chance that you’ve gotten used to Leon’s quirks. As a Resident Evil 4 Remake Mercenaries character, you can think of him as an all-rounder, with an assortment of weapons for short, medium, and long-range combat. His Mayhem Mode ability is also fairly straightforward, and can aid you when in a bind.

Luis Mercenaries Mode tips: Loadout and Mayhem Mode

Mayhem Mode

  • Dynamite - Plant a stick of dynamite on the ground. It will explode after a few seconds or once shot. Additional dynamite sticks can be dropped after the previous one has exploded. Lastly, Luis is immune to explosive damage.

Weapons and items

  • Red9; 30x Handgun Ammo
  • SR-M1903 with Biosensor Scope; 5x Rifle Ammo
  • Boot Knife
  • Flash Grenade
  • 2x First-Aid Sprays

At first glance, Luis might seem like the weakest Resident Evil 4 Remake Mercenaries character. After all, he’s got the Red9, which is really good, but its poor shot grouping can lead to issues during hectic moments. Worse, the SR-M1903 is a bolt-action sniper rifle with slow rate-of-fire.

Thankfully, Luis probably has the best Mayhem Mode ability out of the entire bunch. It causes him to drop dynamite sticks, leading to a massive area-of-effect (AoE) explosion, which he’s also immune to. Essentially, you’ll want to increase the timer via orbs, and then find a decent camping spot. Whenever you’re under threat, you could always count on your explosives to get the job done.

Additionally, Luis’ sniper rifle Biosensor Scope attachment reveals Plaga parasites inside bodies. This means you can quickly destroy them to kill those pesky tentacle mutations. Last but not least, pay attention to Luis’ melee animation, as he’ll sometimes do a punch or a lead pipe swing.

Krauser Mercenaries Mode tips: Loadout and Mayhem Mode

Mayhem Mode

  • Mutation - Temporarily causes Krauser’s arm to mutate, granting you devastating melee attacks. The normal attack (i.e., left mouse button) is a regular swing, whereas the special attack (i.e., left and right mouse buttons) leads to a thrusting attack.

Weapons and items

  • TMP; 30x SMG Ammo
  • EJF-388 Compound Bow; 3x Explosive Arrows
  • Fighting Knife
  • 3x Flash Grenades
  • First-Aid Spray

Now you get to play as one of the campaign bosses. As a Resident Evil 4 Remake Mercenaries character, Krauser has some nifty quirks. The TMP itself isn’t particularly great, and you do need to be mindful of your aim to get headshots. Meanwhile, the EJF Compound Bow should annihilate foes that are clumped together thanks to its AoE explosion.

Krauser becomes even deadlier once you activate his Mayhem Mode, which causes his arm to be fully infected by Las Plagas. The idea is to tear through packs of enemies while it’s active, as it can make mincemeat out of special infected. The main downside, though, is it severely lowers his movement speed. As such, if you activate this while hostiles are further away, it’s as though you completely wasted it.

Hunk Mercenaries Mode tips: Loadout and Mayhem Mode

Mayhem Mode

  • Infinite Ammo - While active, Hunk can continuously fire his weapon without using ammo.

Special action

  • Neck Snap - Hunk’s melee attacks on stunned enemies (i.e., not the normal knife slash) is an instant-kill neck snap.

Weapons and items

  • LE5; 160x SMG Ammo
  • Boot Knife
  • 3x Hand Grenades
  • First-Aid Spray

Hunk doesn’t have multiple weapon options, as he primarily relies on the LE5 SMG. However, he more than makes up for it with his instant-kill neck snap. The idea here is to shoot enemies in the head to cause a stun, before quickly following up with his special melee. And, yes, this works against special infected, too. Just remember that this is a single-target action, so you won’t do AoE pushbacks unlike Leon’s roundhouse kick or Luis’ lead pipe.

As for his Mayhem Mode ability, it does as stated: you’re granted infinite ammo. Make sure you pop it when necessary to shred through hordes. Also, Hunk will automatically reload at the end of the ability’s duration, so watch out in case there’s an enemy nearby.

Hunk's melee move against stunned enemies will instantly kill even elites/special infected.
