HBO's Harry Potter TV Series Lands Succession Veterans As Showrunner And Director

The upcoming HBO reboot of Harry Potter will have a strong behind-the-scenes link to Succession.

Earlier this week, Warner Bros. Discovery revealed that the upcoming Harry Potter TV show is going to be produced as an HBO original series rather than staying exclusively on Max. Apparently, the show is also a little further along than previously reported, because HBO has now announced the primary creative team behind its take on Harry Potter.

Via Deadline, Succession consulting producer Francesca Gardiner will serve as the showrunner, writer, and an executive producer for Harry Potter. The report notes that Gardiner edged out screenwriters Tom Moran and Kathleen Jordan to land the gig. Another Succession veteran, Mark Mylod, has also signed on to executive produce and direct the series. Mylod has also helmed episodes of Game of Thrones, Amazing Stories, and is currently slated to direct four episodes of The Last of Us Season 2.

The new Harry Potter series is said to be a more faithful retelling of the original novels by J.K. Rowling. Additionally, the show will feature an all-new cast. Now that the creative team is in place, the series is looking at a 2026 debut on HBO and casting calls will likely begin soon. Rowling shared the news and endorsed Gardiner and Mylod.

As for Rowling, the author is no longer quite as beloved as she used to be thanks to her outspoken anti-Trans stance, which has alienated her from cast members of the Harry Potter movies as well as some readers who grew up with her novels. Even as recently as this week, Rowling keeps doubling down on her views, regardless of how her fans feel about it.
