The next Dragon Age game now has a new name, as BioWare has confirmed Dragon Age: Dreadwolf is now called Dragon Age: The Veilguard. A gameplay reveal is set for Tuesday, June 11.

BioWare will release "over 15 minutes" of gameplay footage from the opening moments of the game on June 11 at 8 AM PT / 11 AM ET. "This moment means so much to everyone at BioWare, and we wouldn't be here without you. We're ready to have some fun, so join the chat early…we've got a few special surprises for you," BioWare said in a blog post.

BioWare said it made the change from Dreadwolf to The Veilguard to "capture what this game is all about." The game will focus on seven different characters that will serve as your companions. While the Dread Wolf still "has an important part in this tale," your character and the companions are "at the heart" of what the game has to offer. As such, BioWare opted to change the name.

"We changed the name as the original title didn't show just how strongly we feel about our new heroes, their stories, and how you'll need to bring them together to save all of Thedas," BioWare said.

Also in its blog post, BioWare said after Dragon Age: Inquisition came out, the studio experimented with a number of concepts for the next Dragon Age. This included a multiplayer concept, the company said, but this was only a test. The Veilguard will be a single-player game.

"The time we spent experimenting and iterating gradually taught us a lot. This work, and the amazing support from EA, helped us re-focus on creating an incredible single-player game, with all the choices, characters, and world building you'd expect from us," BioWare said.

The developer went on to say that the seven companion characters in The Veilguard will have "deep and compelling" storylines, and the decisions you make will impact your relationship with them.

"You'll unite this team of unforgettable heroes as you take on a terrifying new threat unleashed on the world," BioWare said.

BioWare's Gary McKay told IGN that it would have been "safer" to stick with Dreadwolf as the name because it's "cool." However, McKay said, "It was most important for us to have a title that was authentic to the companions that are the heart of this adventure we've created."

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is reportedly set for release in 2024, though this has yet to be confirmed. It will be the first entry in the main series since 2014's Inquisition, which scored a 9/10 at GameSpot and won Game of the Year at The Game Awards.
