May I add to Gillian Tett’s analysis of the psychology of inflation and why people hate it even when their pay keeps up (“The Dutch central bank and Bidenomics”, Opinion, June 28).

If I get an 8 per cent pay rise, I naturally attribute that to my skills, diligence and all-round excellence as an employee. When 8 per cent inflation takes that away, my hard work was for naught. The idea that without the inflation my pay increase would have been much lower doesn’t cross my mind. Simply put, I earned my pay increase but the government took it away.
