If an agoraphobic Nico moonlighting as Sonic Youth’s guitar tech were secretly taped exorcising her demons, something like Allroh’s first full-length solo album might result.
The Rostock-born Anne Rolfs riffs in contrapuntal blurs, achieving a stark, abrasive beauty. Her vocals, meanwhile, are a desperate, almost babbling wail.
The sitar-led “Ma & Pa” and “Kein CM” display her acoustic chops. Steve Albini, who recorded her, thinks she is “incredible”: his acolytes will do, too.
