The Furry Green Grump is Back in a Sequel to “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!”
Dr. Seuss Enterprises will publish “How the Grinch Lost Christmas!” in September / BY Kim Honey / March 2nd, 2023
It’s been 66 years since Dr. Seuss published How the Grinch Stole Christmas! and the children’s classic about the true meaning of the Yuletide season – spoiler alert: it’s not about the presents – gets a sequel.
How the Grinch Lost Christmas! will be published Sept. 5 by Dr. Seuss Enterprises (a private foundation that holds the copyright to the late Theodor “Ted” Seuss Geisel’s work) and Penguin Random House. It was written by American children’s author Alastair Heim, who penned three Dr. Seuss Beginner Books featuring the Cat in the Hat, and illustrated by artist Aristides Ruiz, who has worked on more than 40 Cat in the Hat books.
“The Grinch is back and ready to prove to the residents of Who-ville that he’s changed,” says the publisher. The furry green grump won’t be stealing any presents this time around, but, one year later, wants to win the Christmas crown by decorating the most stupendous tree ever. Since he’s an anti-hero, things go awry, and his tiny heart ices over before he learns – we assume from little Cindy-Lou Who – that Christmas is not about winning or losing.
For many baby boomers, the book is synonymous with the 1966 animated TV movie, also written by Dr. Seuss, featuring Boris Karloff as the narrator, and songs like “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.” No word on whether there will be a film, but here’s betting that Christmas commerce will win and we’ll soon see it, or stream it, on a screen.
