July Fourth is the perfect time to shop for a new mattress. Like most long holiday weekends (e.g., Memorial Day and Presidents Day), this is when retailers and mattress brands tend to have their best sales. That means if you’re not quite ready to buy, you’ll most likely see the same offers for Labor Day at the end of summer.

You can always find a discount on a new bed, but so many mattress companies advertise sales all year long that it can be hard to know if you’re actually getting a deal or if that "sale price" is really just the usual cost. So we keep tabs on all the mattresses that do well in Consumer Reports’ tests to show you the best offers on high-quality models from top brands such as Avocado, Essentia, Casper, Leesa, and more. The prices listed below are for the queen-size versions, but all other sizes are similarly discounted.

There are also some great discounts on everything you’ll need for a great night’s sleep, including pillows, sheets, sleep masks, and other accessories CR has evaluated. And if you’re a CR member, you can take advantage of some exclusive mattress deals that are better than those offered to the public. You’ll need to be logged in to see the details.

For more information on mattresses, see CR’s mattress buying guide. CR members can check out our mattress ratings to see how well more than 200 models do in our tests for supporting people of all sizes, whether you sleep on your side or your back. Our mattress selector can also help you narrow down your choices.

The Casper Snow, a newcomer to CR’s ratings, is one of the least heat-retaining mattresses we’ve tested, making it great for those who sleep hot. It’s also an all-around high-performing pick. Combining pocketed coils with layers of foam, this hybrid is particularly supportive for petite back sleepers but is also well suited for side sleepers of all sizes and for the average back sleeper. Large/tall sleepers may want to look elsewhere. With a firmness rating of 4 out of 10, it’s on the softer side. Its solid stability rating means sleepers are unlikely to feel vibrations from a partner’s movements.

If you buy directly from Casper, use the code JULYPRIVATE through July 10 to get an extra 5 percent off (the full discount is reflected above).

The Avocado Eco Organic innerspring mattress-in-a-box is back down to its best price, making it one of the best discounts available right now (and CR members can access even more savings as well). It earns solid ratings in our tests for support for side and back sleepers. With a firmness score of 4 out of 10, it’s a much softer alternative to the Avocado Green mattress (which rates a 7 and also doesn’t retain heat) and even the Avocado Green Pillowtop (which rates a 5 and does retain heat). In our member surveys, Avocado innerspring mattresses earn very good ratings for both comfort and owner satisfaction.

Exclusive offer: If you’re a CR member, head over to CR’s Avocado Eco Organic page to read more about its test results and access an exclusive offer for an extra $50 off the sale price of this mattress. Make sure you’re logged in to take advantage of this exclusive discount.

This Beautyrest mattress is another model that’s back down to the same low we saw during the last big sale weekend. It may be a suitable option for large and tall back sleepers, as it got top marks in our test for that sleeper group. It performed nearly as well for sleepers of all other sizes and sleep styles, except large and tall side sleepers, for which the mattress only got middling test results. Otherwise, durability is first-rate, with little in the way of sagging, softening, or other damage in eight years of simulated use.

Exclusive offer: When shopping at Mattress Firm, CR all-access and digital subscribers can save even more. Using the code CR11OFF will garner an extra 11 percent off the sale price of this mattress, bumping the queen down to $463.68. This discount code will work for most Mattress Firm purchases as well, but some exclusions may apply.

The Leesa Studio mattress is back down to the same low price we saw for Memorial Day, beating the regular sale price by $40. It is an exceptional choice for petite back sleepers, as it earned top marks in that lab test. Petite side sleepers and average and large/tall back sleepers will find the mattress offers very good support. But average and large/tall side sleepers may want to consider other options, as the Studio had only average performance in those simulated tests.

The Leesa Legend Hybrid has been "on sale" for $1,949 since its last big price drop during Memorial Day weekend, but now it’s back to that low holiday weekend price, making it an excellent time to buy. It combines innersprings and foam, and proves to be a winning combination for back sleepers, who can expect very good support. For all but petite side sleepers, though, support is merely midrange. The durability is first-rate, with little sagging, softening, or other damage in eight years of simulated use, and this model is highly stable. The Leesa brand earns high marks in CR’s owner surveys for comfort and satisfaction.

The higher-end Casper Wave Hybrid is 2 inches thicker than the Casper Original Hybrid and offers four layers of foam—two memory and two standard polyurethane, compared with the Original Hybrid’s one layer of each. Petite and average back sleepers will find terrific support with this plush model, and side sleepers of all sleep positions will experience adequate support. But large/tall back sleepers will find more support with the Original Hybrid.

This mattress is finally back down to the same low price we saw during Memorial Day. Back sleepers are especially well served by this moderately priced Beautyrest mattress—they can look forward to excellent support. And most side sleepers will enjoy impressive support. (Large and tall side sleepers are the exception.) This innerspring model is highly stable, and the durability is first-rate, with no discernible sagging, softening, or other damage over eight years of simulated use. The 12-inch height means no need for deep-pocket fitted sheets.

Exclusive offer: When shopping at Mattress Firm, CR all-access and digital subscribers can save even more. Using the code CR11OFF will garner an extra 11 percent off the sale price of this mattress, bumping the queen down to $355.99. This discount code will work for most Mattress Firm purchases as well, but some exclusions may apply.

The Tuft & Needle Nod mattress-in-a-box has few weak spots. The innersprings topped with foam deliver impressive support to all types and sizes of sleepers, from petites to large and tall. The durability is top notch, with little in the way of sagging, softening, or damage in eight years of simulated use. This model is highly stable, though it does not resist bounciness, a potential drawback when a sleeper changes position.

This Tuft & Needle mattress is available at multiple retailers for the best price we’ve seen—it’s often on sale for this much, so if you’re not ready to buy you’ll have ample opportunity to get it for this price. According to our member surveys, Tuft & Needle is a comfy mattress-in-a box brand. Its best-rated foam mattress is the Mint, supportive for all sizes and sleep positions. The Mint is the softest among the top foam mattresses CR has tested, receiving a 3 out of 10 on our firmness scale. At 12 inches, it’s also among the thickest. We doubt that you’ll sleep outright cool on this mattress, but our tests did find that it won’t retain heat.

The Essentia Stratami is back on sale for 25 percent off, the same discount we saw for Memorial Day. It is one of the top models in our foam ratings, despite being only 8 inches thick. Average-sized and smaller back sleepers will experience superb support; side sleepers of all sizes and large back sleepers can expect support that’s pretty close to that. Our tests show that this mattress doesn’t retain heat—a great value-add if you sleep hot. With a firmness level of 6 on our firmness scale (1 being the softest; 10 being the firmest), it offers a crowd-pleasing medium-firm feel. In our latest member surveys, Essentia is the only brand in our ratings to receive the top-most comfort score for its foam mattresses.

Avocado makes some top-notch mattresses, and now both versions of the high-scoring Greem mattress are back down to their best prices. Both Avocado mattresses support a wide range of side- and back-sleeper body types. On our firmness scale, the Avocado Green is very firm and the Green Pillowtop is medium-firm.

Exclusive offer: If you’re a CR member, head over to CR’s Avocado Green mattress page to read more about its test results and access an exclusive offer for an extra $50 off the sale price of this mattress. Make sure you’re logged in to take advantage of this exclusive discount.

Leesa’s Sapira mattress garners the same score as the Legend Hybrid listed above, and it was also $100 less during Memorial Day, so you might want to wait and see if the price drops again closer to July Fourth. It, too, combines memory foam and innerspring, and it promises very good support for sleepers of all types. The durability of this mattress is top-notch as well.

Finding the right mattress for how you sleep can be tricky, but in our tests, the Midnight Luxe is a great choice for people of all sizes, whether they sleep on their back or side. One thing to note about this mattress is that it’s 14 inches high, so you’ll need deep-pocket sheets.

The Lifetime 8 Hybrid—one of the few boxed models this longtime mattress retailer sells—comprises distinct layers of latex placed over spring units for a more resilient yet cushioned feel. A foam encasement surrounds the pocketed coils for extra edge support. Overall, the 14¼-inch-thick mattress is a solid choice for sleepers of all sizes and sleep positions. The Lifetime 8 is the firmest offering in the Lifetime line, but it lands a medium (5) rating in our firmness scale. Moreover, king-size versions of this mattress can be customized on each side, so sleep partners can each create a firmness level according to their individual preference. CR members who own a Charles P. Rogers innerspring find their mattresses quite comfortable and are satisfied with their purchase.

At this new low sale price, the Zoma Hybrid is one of the most budget-friendly options among our list of top innerspring mattress-in-a-box performers. Sleepers of all shapes and sizes should receive very good or excellent spinal support, with average-sized (or smaller) back sleepers doing especially well. This 13-inch mattress limits motion transfer pretty handily, too, and like most innersprings, it won’t make you sleep hot. It’s pretty great at motion isolation (unusual for an innerspring) and feels pretty soft, rating a 3 on our firmness scale. Zoma offers a 100-night free trial, and you can return it after 31 days from delivery for a full refund.
