For 2024 Volkswagen has freshened the Atlas Cross Sport, dropping the V6 engine in the process. The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is now the sole engine choice, and receiving a bump up to 269 hp, but we only got 20 mpg overall with the freshened Atlas, which is not so great.

The freshening also brings an electronic gear selector and very confusing, distracting controls. The Cross Sport is a roomy, five-passenger SUV, and it drives well unless you get the 21-inch wheels and tires that degrade ride comfort. The ride is decent with the standard wheels and tires, and handling is responsive.

The new for 2020 Cross Sport is VW’s edgier take on the Atlas three-row SUV. The five-passenger Cross Sport shares its underpinnings and engine choices with the larger three-row Atlas, but it loses the third row and some cargo space.

Handling is nimbler than one would expect from such a large vehicle. The ride has an underlying firmness but absorbs bumps decently. The seats are comfortable and the controls are easy to use. The base 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder is quite responsive and capable of moving the Cross Sport adequately, and there is also a more powerful 3.6-liter V6. The turbo four-cylinder engine gets slightly better fuel economy. Both front- and all-wheel drive are offered. Forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind spot warning are standard.
